Arkport, NY – New Arkport school district superintendent Jesse Harper discussed implementing a policy for deciding Valedictorians and Salutatorians in the upcoming school year. “We have always just done the highest GPA,” said Harper, “and we recently just changed to the weighted average, but we did not have a policy.” “As it stands now, a student can just come in from another district and step right into the top spot and take the title away from a student that’s been here the whole time.” The new policy, put in place to help the students in the school rising up, will be implemented over the next two years. A major change will be changing the GPA differential between Valedictorian and Salutatorian from .6 to .3. “If you look at the past three school years, we have never had a .3 differential,” explained Harper.
