Audrey M. Gessner, formerly of Hornell

HORNELL-Audrey M. Gessner, 93, formerly of Lily Ave. and East Ave., passed away, in the presence of her loving family, on Sunday evening (July 5, 2015) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell where she has resided since 2008.

 

Born in Hornell on Dec. 30, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Marguerite VanBeuren Kniskern. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her two husbands and the father of her children, Robert Woodworth and Emmett Hammond; also her third husband, Frederick Gessner and her sister, Arlene Davis.

 

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Audrey was a graduate of Hornell High School and was employed as a sales clerk at the former Koskie’s Music Store and the J.C. Penney Co. Store in Hornell.

 

Audrey was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. She served as a volunteer at St. James Mercy Hospital, was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post No. 2250 and the Women of the Moose Lodge No. 210 in Hornell.

 

A very loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her loving family includes her three daughters, Maureen (Dr. M. Tariq) Randhawa of Hornell, Vickie (Tom) Benson of Almond and Karen (Don) Lowry of Honea Path, S.C.; her three sons, James (Ellen) Woodworth of Watertown, Craig Hammond (Mary Ann Eicher) of Hornell and Timothy Hammond of Hornell. She is also survived by the joys in her life, her 14 grandchildren, Terri Brown, Kimberly (Andy) Mayo, Christopher (Tamara) Phillips, Jason (Crystal) Woodworth, Jonathan Woodworth, Emily Woodworth, Kari (Dale) Devendorf, Kellie (Joe) Bossie, Michael (Kristine) Hillman, Kam (Jeremy) Houghtaling, Valerie (Jeremy) Hunt, Justin Hammond, Sara Hammond, Jennifer Mullen; also her 16 great-grandchildren and her nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Audrey M. Gessner.

 

Calling hours are 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral and committal service will be held following calling hours at 7 p.m. Wednesday with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

 

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech St., Johnson City, N.Y. 13790 or to Faith In Action, P.O. Box 117, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
