HORNELL-Elizabeth H. “Betty” Trethaway, 88, passed away early Tuesday evening (Nov. 12, 2013) at her home on Hornell St.
Born on Sept. 2, 1925 at her family home on Elizabeth St. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Herbert Hughes DDS and Florence Messer Hughes. In 1947 she married Dan C. Trethaway, who predeceased her in 2003 after 56 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Dean Trethaway in 1975.
A former resident of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Betty has resided in Hornell since 1954.
She was a graduate of Meyers High School and the Wyoming Valley Homeopathic Hospital School of Nursing in Wilkes-Barre where she received her education to become a Registered Nurse.
Betty was affiliated for a time at the Danville State Hospital in Dansville, Pa. and after moving to Hornell she dedicated her life to raising her family.
For many years she was an active member of the former Park Methodist Church and later the United Methodist Church in Hornell where she sang in the choirs for over 45 years. She was a member and Past President of the United Methodist Women and also served as a volunteer for the Kids Kafe that was associated with the church.
Betty had many hobbies and interests that included, roller skating, cross country skiing, bicycling, reading, quilting, sewing and ceramics. She was a member of a recorder group and also had a collection of over 20 old world Santas.
Her loving family includes her son, Dan C. Trethaway II of Aurora, Ontario, Canada; her two grandchildren, Cari (Keith) Flowers of Panama City, Fla. and Dan C. III (Suzanne) Trethaway of New Orleans, La.; her four great-grandchildren, Dan C. IV, Dean, Jade and Haley; also her great-great-grandson, Levi.
Calling hours are from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at the United Methodist Church in Hornell where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Committal services and interment will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Maple Hill Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 7528 N. Main St. Ext., P.O. Box 308, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home and church.
