Canisteo Concerned About Forced Consolidation

Canisteo Officials Voice Concerns About Consolidating Local Governments and This Year’s Proposed State Budget
March 3 2014

CANISTEO, NY – Canisteo Village Mayor Bill Tucker (D) believes Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed property tax freeze would make it difficult for the Canisteo Village Board to do things like buy needed equipment for road maintenance.

Village Board member Tim Harkenrider (R) maintains that the proposed Cuomo budget works towards leading to a forced consolidation of local governments, because villages like Canisteo would not be able to function under all the new rules, if the governor’s budget passes. Governor Cuomo is quoted in the Examiner.com, as saying that property taxes are too high because “there are too many local governments”.
