Canisteo Town Board Approves Fire Contract – Budget

November 11th, 2017

CANISTEO, NY – After 2 quick public hearings, the town of Canisteo approved a one year fire contract with the village and a budget for 2018. Canisteo, like Hartsville, is unhappy about the $10,000 spike in premiums over the 2017 fire and ambulance contract but still approved the payment.

According to Town Supervisor Steve Weed, they will be paying the village $105,000 for their 2018 coverage. The village initially wanted a three year deal but the town rejected that in favor of just 1 year. Weed was optimistic that with a new Mayor in the village, hopefully there will be more transparency on issues such as this in the future.

Also, a budget totaling $920,500 minus the fire contract was approved. Of that number $676,000 is to be raised by taxes, and $185,000 will be generated by revenue to the town. It was noted, that if the fire contract is included into the budget, it will be the first time in history that they have a budget exceeding $1 million. Even though some expenses are up, there will only be a slight tax increase of less than .01% or $.07 per thousand of assessed value.
