Catherine (DeSanto) Smart, of Hornell, formerly of Dansville

HORNELL-Catherine (DeSanto) Smart, 85, a resident of Updyke’s Willow Ridge Nursing Facility, formerly of Dansville, died Monday afternoon (May 11, 2015) at Hornell Gardens, following a brief illness.

 

A native of Hornell, she was born March 13, 1930 and was the daughter of Nicholas and Catherine (Changose) DeSanto.

 

Catherine grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later graduated from Hornell High School.

 

She resided in Dansville for nearly 50 years where she was employed at Rochester Telephone and also The Dansville Press. While living in Dansville, Catherine was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.

 

Catherine was married to Norman G. Smart who died in 2003. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Arkport where she lived until returning to Hornell about 6 years ago.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

 

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Rose DiVincenzo, Mary Leto, Louise Fratercangelo, Lucy Chapman, Anna Datini and Dorothy DeSanto; and two brothers, Joseph DeSanto and Nick DeSanto.

 

Surviving are her son, Greg (Sharon) Smart of McKinney, TX; 2 brothers, Francis “Sonny” (Ellen) DeSanto of Hornell, and Richard (Josephine) DeSanto of Rochester; three sisters, Theresa (Denny) Napolione of Olean, Helen (Joe) Pardi of Arkport, Margaret “Marge” DeSanto of Hornell; 3 grandchildren, Lauren (James) Moore of Hornell, Eric Smart of Atlanta, NY and Melissa (Richard) Solorio of Midlothian, TX; 2 great-grandchildren, Jessica and James, JR; and many nieces and nephews.

 

At Catherine’s request there will be no calling hours. A private grave-side service will be held at the convenience of the family in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dansville, NY.

 

Catherine’s family requests that memorial contributions in her name be made to St. Ann’s Academy, PO Box 446, Hornell, NY.
