Cheryl Ambrose Green, of Hornell

HORNELL-Cheryl Ambrose Green, 67, of Hornell, died Sunday afternoon (April 24, 2016)
at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a long illness.

Born in Sewickley, PA on July 27, 1948, she was the daughter of Richard & Mary (Goode) Ambrose.

Cheryl grew up in Aliquippa, PA and was a graduate of Hopewell High School (class of 1966). Following high school, she graduated from Beaver County Community College in Freedom PA and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem, NC.

Serving as a volunteer in the V.I.S.T.A. program (the domestic version of the Peace Corp), Cheryl was assigned to Hornell in 1970. She had been employed briefly at Crowley Dairy in Arkport and also at the Hornell March of Dimes or Hornell. Cheryl began working at the Hornell Housing Authority in July 1980 as a temporary employee and became a permanent employee in November of 1981.  She retired from her position as Tenant Relations Assistant in July 2013.

Cheryl was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities, including Deacon and office volunteer. She was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and loved rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Team.

She will be remembered as a woman who loved helping anyone in need, whether it be family or friend. CHERYL WAS THE ROCK ON WHICH HER FAMILY STOOD!

Cheryl was married on March 30, 1985 to Fredrick Green who died November 23, 2001.

Surviving are her sister, Alice (Michael) Nestor of Aliquippa, PA; her brother, Richard (LeAnn) Ambrose of Evans City, PA; her in-laws, Timothy & Mary Green of Wesley, MA and Katherine Green of Hornell; several nieces, including Mary Nestor of Aliquippa, PA; and will be sadly missed by her dear friends, Paul Virgo, Eileen Hamelin, Gary & Kathy Foster, all of Hornell along with her “four legged boy, Cooper.”

The family of Cheryl Ambrose Green will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. Funeral & committal services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Hornell United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Katherine Griffis officiating. Burial will be in Sylvania Hills Cemetery, Rochester, PA.

Cheryl’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name be made to the Hornell Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Rd., Hornell, NY 14843. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
