City Picks Crosby St. Resident for Citizen Recognition Award

July 31st, 2019

HORNELL, NY – Hornell Mayor John Buckley and 5th ward alderman Steve Shinebarger paid a visit to 33 Crosby Street Wednesday evening to recognize Tom Houghtaling for his outstanding job in landscaping his property.

Buckley occasionally recognizes a city resident for going “above and beyond” in making their property stand out in their respective wards. Buckley commended Houghtaling, and said people like him are an inspiration for everyone to make their property appeasing to the eye.

Houghtaling said he has lived in the area his whole life, and that particular residence for 3 years. “Hey, if someone drives by and it brightens their day, then it makes it all worth it,” said Houghtaling. Then when asked if he gets a lot of compliments on his property by neighbors and passer byes he replied, “I certainly do!”

Houghtaling said he officially retired years ago but still works part time. “I have been retired for 10 years now and have been working ever since,” he said with a chuckle, “But my passion lies with what you’re looking at.”
