Darryl W. Coots, Hornell

Darryl W. Coots, 36, of 53 Hartshorn St., Hornell, died unexpectedly on Thursday (February 27, 2014) as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Darryl was born in Hornell on June 1, 1977. He grew up in Addison, NY area and later in Rushville, NY where he attended Marcus Whitman High School. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1996 – 2000 and stationed for a time in Korea. Darryl was a member of the Addison American Legion Post 730.

Following his honorable discharge from the US Army, Darryl moved to Hornell and was employed as an auto technician at Wilkins RV and later as a technician and driver for Covered Wagon. For the past four years, he was employed as a mechanic for New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), working out of Hornell. He served as vice union chair of Local 83 IBEW.

Darryl enjoyed hunting, fishing, go cart racing and was an avid bowler and gun collector. He also loved working on and restoring cars & trucks and lending a helping hand to his friends while they worked on their cars & trucks. He served as a coach for the Hornell Youth (Flag) Football League and also coached Hornell Little League. He was also a former player for the Hornell Dragons Football Team.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Savanna Rose (Dugo) Coots who died December 19, 2002.

Surviving are his fiancé, Alicia Dugo of Hornell; his parents, Daniel (Deborah) Coots of Rushville and Dyenne (Doc) Perkins of Addison, NY; 3 children, Dylan Coots, Clayton Coots and Miranda Garner; 2 sisters, Danielle (Patrick) Rutherford of Farmington, NY and Denise (Mitch Dudley) Coots of Addison; his maternal grandmother, Mary Gliewe of Bloomfield, NY; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews.

The family of Darryl W. Coots will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM and on Wednesday from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at
1:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

Darryl’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name be made to the Addison American Legion Post 730, 85 Maple St., Addison, NY 14801. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home or click here to print a form.

In recognition of Darryl’s service to his country, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.
