E. Lorraine Crandall, of Hornell

HORNELL-E. Lorraine Crandall, 87, of Green Acres Trailer Park, Hornell, died Saturday afternoon (March 7, 2015) at her home, following a long illness.

 

Born in Hornell on February 1, 1928, she was the daughter of Francis and Elizabeth (Malone) Barnett.

 

Lorraine was a graduate of Lincoln School and later graduated from Hornell High School (class of 1945). She was employed as secretary to Executive Vice President at the Hornell Area Chamber of Commerce for several years. For 28 years she was employed at Alfred State College (SUNY Alfred) as Assistant to the President, serving three presidents: David Huntington, John Hunter, and William Rezak. She retired in 1997.

 

She had been a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and more recently was a member of St. Brendan / St. Jude Parish. Lorraine had been a member and served as secretary of Women’s Council at Alfred and a member of the Alfred Association of Women and the Friends of the College Cultural Association. She had been a member, secretary, and vice-president of the Hornell Area Arts Council, and a founder and charter president of the National Secretary’s Association (NSA), now known as International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). She had also been a member of the Mayor’s Citizen Advisory Committee of Hornell, the Hornell Business and Professional Women, and a member of Wee Playhouse of Alfred.

 

Lorraine was married on May 26, 1951 in St. Ignatius Loyola Church to Neil C. Crandall, who died February 24, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: James “Jim” Barnett (died 1989), Francis “Ace” Barnett (died 1991), William “Bill” Barnett (died 1995), and Michael “Mike” Barnett (died 1996).

 

Surviving are her longtime partner-in-life, John F. “Jack” Smith, her children: Colleen (David) Mantell of Greece, NY; Michael (Ervilla) Crandall of Almond, NY; Elizabeth (Michael) McDaniels of Hornell, NY; and Kathleen (Andrew) Bayus of Alfred Station, NY; 2 stepchildren: Kathleen Smith of Mt. Dora, FL, and Kellie Smith of Burlington, VT; 12 grandchildren: Michael (Janice) Mantell; Kevin (Melyssa) Mantell; Jeffrey (Jenelle) Mantell; Andrea (Sean) DeRubba; Eric (Shelly) Crandall; Erin Crandall; Chere′ (Randy) Troxel; Meshion (Bruce) Hackett; Corinne (Jesse) McDaniels-Davidson; Jacob, Lucas, and Levi Bayus; 11 great-grandchildren: Holden, Harrison, Miles, Maria, Joshua, Kennedy, Colton, Sawyer, Dylan, Abigail, and Cecilia; several nieces and nephews.

 

The family of Lorraine Crandall will receive friends on Thursday, (March 12, 2015) from 3 – 6 p.m. at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY, where a memorial service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 6 p.m. with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

 

Lorraine’s family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions in her name be made to either the Hornell Alumni Association, PO Box 135, Hornell, NY 14843; the Hornell Area Arts Council, 20 Broadway Mall, Hornell, NY 14843; or to the Hornell Public Library, 64 Genesee St., Hornell, NY 14843. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
