Eleanor J. Lamphier, of Greenwood

GREENWOOD: Eleanor J. Lamphier, 75, of Jackson Hill Rd. passed away Wednesday (June 3, 2015) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. following a brief illness.

 

Eleanor was born July 21, 1939, in North Hornell, to William and Edna (Crozier) Atherton. On June 16, 1962, in Greenwood, she married Harley W. Lamphier who survives and resides in Greenwood. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a granddaughter Alison Lamphier and a sister Lucinda Atherton.

 

Eleanor was a graduate of Jasper Central School and the Geneseo State Teachers College where she earned her elementary teaching degree. She started her teaching career at the former Lincoln School in Hornell then continued teaching in the Greenwood Central School District retiring in 1997 after 35 years.

 

She was a member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She also volunteered many hours to the Greenwood Vol. Fire Dept. and helped her husband with the Greenwood area Boy Scouts.

 

In addition to her husband of nearly 53 years, Harley Lamphier of Greenwood, Eleanor is survived by a daughter: Melinda (Earl) Brown of Essex Junction, VT. a son: Steven (Darlene) Lamphier of Colchester, VT. Three wonderful grand children: Benjamin Brown, Samuel Lamphier and Hannah Lamphier. She is also survived by a brother: Sheldon (Sue) Atherton of Jasper and a sister: Catherine (Robert) Carretto of Scottsville, VA., and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where a memorial service will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 8:00 PM. with the Rev. Daniel Knopf officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, N.Y.
