Evelyn M. Burd, of Hornell

HORNELL-Evelyn M. Burd, 96, formerly of Grand St., passed away Monday morning (April 9, 2018) at Elderwood at Hornell, where she has resided since August of 2011.

Born in Atlantic City, N.J. on March 25, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Dennis and Ethel (Wagner) McRae. On June 1, 1940, she was married at Immaculate Conception Church in Philadelphia, Pa. to Robert W. Burd, who predeceased her on April 12, 1987, after 47 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her two brothers, Dennis McRae and Donald McRae and her sister, Mary Landi.

A resident of Hornell for most of her life, Evelyn dedicated her life to being a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church and later at St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell.

Evelyn loved to knit and also enjoyed crocheting and doing crafts.

Her loving family includes her three children, Robert (Thelma) Burd and Kathleen Burd all of Hornell and Donna (James) Parker of Concord, N.C.; her 10 grandchildren, Karen (Steve) Saxton, Diane (Bruce) Tucker, Suzanne (James) Codespote, Robert (Pam) Burd, Craig Burd, Matthew Burd, Denise (James) Coleman, Michael (Lori) Parker, Cathryn (Brian) Morse and David (Sonya) Parker; her 17 great-grandchildren; her sister, Joan Mulhern of Norristown, Pa.; as well as her nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Elderwood for the wonderful and compassionate care they gave to Evelyn.

Calling hours are 5-7 p.m. Friday (April 13, 2018) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday (April 14, 2018). Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 13 Beech St., Johnson City, N.Y. 13790. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
