Fatal Accident In Hartsville

Mrach 14, 2018

Statement From NYS Police:

On March 13, 2018, at approximately 5:50 p.m., New York State Troopers from the North Hornell barracks responded to a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Fall Creek Road and Bearlick Hollow Road in the Town of Hartsville. Reports from a passing delivery service driver and area residents indicated that a female was found trapped underneath the driver’s side of the vehicle and that no other passengers were present at the time of her discovery. Responding EMT’s and neighbors were able to move the vehicle and extricate the woman who was transported by ambulance to St. James Mercy hospital. Lifesaving measures were ultimately unsuccessful and she was pronounced deceased at 6:36 p.m.

Initial investigation has indicated that the driver, identified as 75-year-old Bonnie S. Kraft of Canisteo, had stopped at her rural mailbox to retrieve her mail. Evidence at the scene indicated that Kraft erroneously put the vehicle into reverse gear instead of park, exited the idling vehicle, and was subsequently knocked to the ground and pinned by the unoccupied rolling vehicle. The investigation is ongoing and no foul play is currently suspected.
