Harley W. Lamphier, of Greenwood

GREENWOOD: Harley W. Lamphier, 79, of County Route 63 Jackson Hill Rd., passed away Thursday (Jan. 18, 2018) at the Bath VA Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

Harley was born December 23, 1938 in North Hornell to the late Howard L. and Celia (Pierson) Lamphier. On June 16, 1962 in Greenwood, he married Eleanor J. Atherton who predeceased him in June of 2015. He was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Alison Lamphier, a brother Hugh L. Lamphier and brother-in-law, Walter Jackson.

Harley was a life-long resident of Greenwood, where he graduated from Greenwood Central School class of 1957. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. serving our country proudly from 1958 to 1962 and being honorably discharged as a Corporal.

He worked as a machinist tool maker for Corning Inc. for 40 years, retiring in 1997. Among his civic services he was a member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church and the Greenwood Vol. Fire Dept. for 39 years where he held offices as a Trustee and Truck Captain. Harley was Scout master of Greenwood Troop #62 from 1980-90 and a member of the Canisteo American Legion. He was Vice President of the Greenwood Cemetery Association and was actively involved with the Greenwood-Rexville Food Pantry.

In 2012 he received the Henry W. Hollands Community Service award presented by the Canisteo Rotary Club. In 2014 he received the Greenwood Citizen of the year award and had forty years of dedicated service to the Sullivan Park Fire Brigade.

Harley enjoyed traveling with Eleanor and his sister and brother-in-law Janet and Walt Jackson on many wonderful excursions. He was a very avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.

Harley is survived by a daughter, Melinda (Earl) Brown of Essex Junction, VT. a son, Steven (Darlene) Lamphier of Colchester, VT. Three grandchildren, Benjamin Brown, Samuel and Hannah Lamphier. Harley is also survived by a sister Janet Jackson of Greenwood.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Saturday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where a memorial service with military honors will take place following calling hours at 8:00 pm. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Greenwood, NY.
