WAYLAND-Harry E. Smalt, 84, passed away early Thursday evening (Sept. 11, 2014) in the presence of his loving family, at his home on Derevees Road.
Born in Wayland on May 7, 1930, he was the son of the late Gerald and Theresa Amidon Smalt. On Feb. 19, 1955, he was married at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell to the former Mary Rees, who survives.
Harry attended Wayland Central School and joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and proudly served his country in Germany and attained the rank of Corporal before his honorable discharge in 1953.
He and Mary resided in Hornell for about four years before moving to the village of Wayland; for the past 54 years they have resided at their home on Derevees Road.
A self employed carpenter, Harry enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting, fishing and in his younger years he also spent time trapping.
Besides his loving wife of 59 years, Mary, his family also includes his seven children, Susan Smalt of Wayland, Ellen (David) Harris of North Carolina, Teresa Bailey of Florida, Michael Smalt of Wayland, Elizabeth Krider of Syracuse, Nancy (Joseph) MacDougal of South Carolina and Eric (Bobbi) Smalt of Wayland; his 11 grandchildren, Christopher Smalt, Erika Popple, Jessica, Shawn and Mikela Bailey, Danielle and Brittany Krider, Alicia and Zacharay MacDougal, Samantha and Nathan Smalt; his four great-grandchildren, Jagger and Jiada Smalt, Mason and Madeline Foote; also his nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his son, Timothy Smalt in 1998 and his sister, Geraldine Edgecomb.

Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 W. Naples St., Wayland, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Committal services and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Wayland.
