Herman J. “Herm” Mullen, of Hartsville

HARTSVILLE: Herman J. “Herm” Mullen, 90, of Call Hill Rd. passed away
peacefully Friday morning (Nov. 17, 2017) at his home with the care and love
of his family around him.

Herm was born July 30, 1927 in the town of Hartsville (Slate Creek) to the
late Daniel and Mabel (Caward) Mullen.

He attended the Slate Creek Schoolhouse until it was consolidated in 1939,
after which he attended Canisteo Central School. He was paid ten dollars a
month for building the morning fires at the Slate Creek Schoolhouse.
On March 12, 1949 in Greenwood, he married the former Agnes Payne who
predeceased him in March of 2014.

Herm was a lifelong resident of the Hartsville area where he owned and
operated his own dairy farm for many years, retiring from farming in August
of 1981. After retirement he continued his love of the outdoors as a
forester and logger. He was also the “accomplished neighborhood” mechanic
helping all those who came to him for help. He was a former member of the
Hartsville Town Board and had attended the Hartsville Community Baptist
Church.

Herm was always a willing and generous helper to family and friends. He
possessed a unique “Irish” wit. The foundational principle and inspiration
for his life is found in I Corinthians 13:13, “.the greatest of these is
love.”

Survivors include two daughters: June (Charles) Taylor and Mona (Dr. Brian)
Meagher all of Andover, two sons, Kenneth Mullen of Ensenada, Mexico and
Neal Mullen of Weatherford, TX. four grandchildren, Summer (Brett) Halsey,
Dr. Brook (Dr. Joseph) Baade, Patrick Meagher and Colin Meagher, and seven
great grandchildren, Jillian, Ashlyn, Evalyn, Seth and Vara Halsey, Maxwell
and Samuel Baade.

Herman is also survived by four sisters, Erma Lambert, Eloise (Conrad)
Hilsdorf, Jane (Leonard) Campbell all of Hartsville and Kathleen (Rev.
William) Shepherd of Canisteo and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Tuesday at the H.P.
Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where funeral
and committal services will take place Wednesday at 11:00 am with the Rev.
William Shepherd officiating. Burial will be in Bennetts Creek Cemetery,
Greenwood, NY.
