Howard E. “Bucky” Hartwell, of Arkport

ARKPORT-Howard E. “Bucky” Hartwell, 89, of 620 Pine Knoll Park, passed away Sunday (August 10, 2014) at the Wellsville Manor Care Center.

Born in Hornell, September 9, 1924, the son of Rush C. and Minnie B.Barney Hartwell, he had resided in Arkport all of his life. He was a graduate of Arkport Central School and had served his country as a member of the United States Army during WW-2. He had been employed in construction and was involved in the building of the former Bethesda Community Hospital in North Hornell. In 1960, he established “ Hartwell Auto Parts “ in Arkport which he operated for several years. He also assisted his wife Dorothy in the operation of “Dot’s Curios and Antiques” in Arkport .

Bucky was a charter member of the Arkport American Legion Post and was probably the Post’s oldest living member.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Harriett Hartwell and his brothers, Raymond and Orrin Hartwell.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy to whom he was married on December 31, 1954 and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell on Wednesday evening at 7 PM with Rev. Pam Carey officiating. Burial will be in Heritage Hill Cemetery in Arkport.

Because of allergies, flowers are greatly declined. Friends wishing may make memorial contributions to the Arkport American Legion Post, Carter Street, Arkport, NY 14807 in Bucky’s memory.
