Jerald L. “Jerry” Lewis, of Hornell and formerly of Canisteo

HORNELL/CANISTEO: Jerald L. “Jerry” Lewis, 77, of Pardee St. formerly of Canisteo passed away unexpectedly Monday (May 9, 2016) at his home of natural causes.

Jerry was born October 4, 1938 at the former Bethesda Hospital in North Hornell to the late Harvey L. and Helen E. (Marley) Lewis.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving active duty proudly from 1961-63 and retiring from the Army National Guard in 1984 as a Sergeant. Jerry was proprietor/owner of “JD’s Place” on Main St. in Canisteo for more than 20 years. Prior to the tavern he was a truck driver for the former Canada Dry Distributing Center in Hornell, the former Dunkirk Ice Cream of Hornell and Alfred Atlas.

Jerry was a very avid sports fan who especially like baseball. He enjoyed watching both the N.Y. Yankees and N.Y. Mets. and for many years managed many softball teams throughout the area. He was also a former member of the Canisteo Fire Dept.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Donald and Jackie Lewis of Canisteo, 3 grandchildren who were the light of his days: Hayden Lewis, Shelby Lewis and Paige Pierson. He is also survived by four sisters: Carol Melnyk of Canisteo, Janice McCarthy of Hornell, Margaret Carey of Culpeper, VA. and Helen (Jerry) Brutsman of Jasper. One brother: John Lewis of Hornell and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by an infant sister: Joyce Lewis and sister: Joan Ackerson.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Friday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where a memorial service with military honors will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 7:00 pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
