June Elizabeth Rollins, of Greenwood

GREENWOOD: After being blessed with a life filled with love, family, and happiness, at the age of 88, June Elizabeth Rollins went to be with the Lord on April 14, 2018. Although many will grieve the loss of June, her family and friends who knew and loved her, would suggest that instead you rejoice in a life well lived, a life full of laughter, family, faith, friends, and her love for music.

June, a long-time resident of the Canisteo/Greenwood area, was born on June 24, 1929 in Turin, N.Y. to Jay and Mildred Hoskins. On June 28, 1952 in Lyons Falls, she married Clair A. Rollins who predeceased her in July of 1992.

June is survived by her four children, Tim Rollins of Canisteo, Teri (Michael) Melvin of Haymarket, VA, Scott (Debra) Rollins of Canisteo and Tracy (Elizabeth) Rollins of Groveland. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, sister and brother-in-law Rosmund and Richard Willover of Bath and several nieces and nephews. June was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, Robert and Thomas Hoskins.

June had many accomplishments in her lifetime. She received a bachelor’s degree in music from SUNY Fredonia in 1950, and also a certification in teaching at the nursery-elementary level. She taught vocal and instrumental music and/or elementary education for 54 years before retiring in 2004. 52 of those years were at the Greenwood Central School where she directed numerous musicals, third grade bike rides and tapping for maple syrup.

June received a number of awards to include a special Mission Recognition Award-Methodist Church, Music Dean District United Methodist-Houghton College, General Douglas MacArthur Youth Award, Outstanding Educator Award Twin Tiers of NY and PA. presented by Governor George Pataki, and Outstanding Citizen West Greenwood Grange. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Marquis Who’s Who in American Education and Elementary Teacher of the Year.

June was the church organist at the Greenwood Methodist Church for 43 years, Andover Methodist church organist for 20 years and directed the Greenwood Community Band. Her other interests included flower gardening, crafts, needle work and quilling.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Tuesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will take place Wednesday at 11:00 am with Rev. Peggy Knopf officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
