Lewis E. “Lewie” Pierce, of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Lewis E. “Lewie” Pierce, 78, of Stephens St. passed away Tuesday (June 20, 2017) at his home.

Lewie was born December 16, 1938 in Canisteo to Wells and Mabel (MaGill) Pierce. On February 16, 1968 in Canisteo he married the former Judy Kay Clark who predeceased him in January of 2013. He was also predeceased by an infant sister Lucille Pierce and a sister Carol Towner.

A life long resident of the Canisteo Valley, Lewie had been a 50 year union carpenter and retired as a member of Corning Local 700. He was affectionately known as “Little A**” and “Lewie the Lip” by his fellow workers. He had worked for the Penn Yan Builders of Penn Yan, NY, for nearly twenty years both on building projects and road construction. Through his union membership he had also worked for many area construction companies through the years. His outside interests included hunting, especially fox hunting with his dogs. Lewie also enjoyed frequenting flea markets and yard sales for a “good deal” and he also enjoyed watching the NY Mets.

Lewie will be remembered as a hard working man dedicated to his wife, children and grandchildren. His dry sense of humor and quick wit will always be a part of everyone who knew him.

Lewie is survived by two daughters: Julie (Hullon) Driver of Georgia, Sheila Steiner of Belle Haven and one son Russell (Jodie) Pierce of Canisteo, nine grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Lewis Smith, Emily (Daniel) Irwin, Aiden Driver, Dalton and Kiehlen Steiner, Shantalle (Ryan) Dixon, Stephen and Allison Pierce and several great grandchildren.

He is also survived by a brother: Warren (Sandy) Pierce of Canisteo, six sisters; Marion Rhude, Marge Hosmer and Lois Raish all of Canisteo, Onalee (Don) Cady of Jasper and Dorothea Gunn all of Cameron and Ginger Stewart of Ohio, two brothers-in-law, LaVern (Priscilla) Clark of Almond and Harold Towner of FL. as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-4 pm Sunday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 4:00 pm. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
