Marjorie E. “Marge” Vance, formerly of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Marjorie E. “Marge” Vance, 88, formerly of State Route 36 passed away peacefully Tuesday evening (March 27, 2018) at Hornell Gardens where she had resided since September of 2014.

Marge was born October 23, 1929 in Hornell to Carl and Mabel (Holmes) Mead.

On September 25, 1948 in Hornell she married Henry Mahlon “Meg” Vance, Jr. who predeceased her in November of 2009. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Mary Ann Boerner, Doris Harris and Lettitia Robinson, as well as three brothers, Leslie and Leon Mead and Carl Mead, Jr.

Marge attended Hornell High School and had been employed at the former Scott’s Dairy in Canisteo and the former F.W. Woolworth’s Store in Hornell. She retired from the Canisteo Central School District after 30 years of service working in the Elementary cafeteria.

She was a past member of the Canisteo Grange and a member of the New Hope Wesleyan Church in Hornell.

Marge is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Warren) Johnson of S.C., two sons, Henry M. “Hank” (Nancy) Vance of New Plaltz and James (Faith) Vance of Hornell, 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A special thanks to her niece JoAnne Taylor for the time she gave and spent with Aunt Marge.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm Friday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will take place immediately following calling hours at 3:00 pm. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
