Mary Rose Daniels, formerly of Hornell

Mary Rose Daniels, 94, formerly of 44 Davenport St., Hornell died Monday morning (March 3, 2014) at Latta Road Nursing Facility where she had resided for the past year.

Born in Hornell on June 22, 1919 and was the daughter of Frank & Catherine (Surra) DeGaetano.

Mary grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and later attended Hornell High School. She was employed for several years at the former Dolores Dress Factory and later at the former Cameo Shop in Hornell. For several years Mary worked for her brother at DeGaetano’s Shoe Store in Hornell.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a member of St. Ann’s Church where, in her younger years, taught Religious Education classes. She was a life member of the G. Carducci Lodge (Sons of Italy). Mary enjoyed spending time in her kitchen — cooking & baking — and was well known for her delicious cakes.

In 1941 she was married to Nicholas “Nick” Daniels who died October 31, 2001. Mary was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Mateo DeGaetano, Matthew DeGaetano and Vincent “Doty” DeGaetano; 3 sisters, Vincena Dodd, Yolanda Weidman and Domenica “Dee” Bridge.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Pam (Bill) Fenlon of Rochester and Diane (Mike) Sufra of Rochester; 1 son, Mike (Karen) Daniels of Hornell; 3 sisters, Julie Delaney of Hornell, Frances “Fran” (Jim) Crain of Hornell and Ann Marie Potter of Hornell; 6 grandsons; 5 great-grandchildren; many nieces & nephews.

The family of Mary Rose Daniels will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday at St. Ann’s Church with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Mary’s family request that memorial contributions in her name be made to St. Ann’s Accademy, PO Box 446, Hornell, NY 14843. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
