Patricia E. Young, formerly of Hornell

HORNELL-After celebrating 95 years of life on June 2, 2017, Patricia Elizabeth (Dailey) Young passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

Born in Hornell on June 2, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Fitzstephens) Dailey. Known as “TigerL’il” during her high school days at Hornell High, she graduated in 1941. She furthered her education at E.J. Meyer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo to earn her nursing degree. On June 29, 1945 she married Robert “Bob” Young in St. Augustine, FL.

Pat’s career as a Registered Nurse included many years at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell. She took time away from nursing to dedicate her life to caring for her seven children, extended family members and neighbors. She was always willing to give care and lend her nursing expertise to friends and family members in need. She made a positive impact on the community as a volunteer for a large number of organizations, including: Cub Scouts Den Mother, Camp Fire Girls Leader, Camp Rathbun nurse, Hornell School PTA (member and past President), and Desperado Debs volunteer to name a few. Her favorite times were spent supporting her children and grandchildren at myriad graduations, sporting events, music concerts, dance recitals, et al, and swimming at Conesus Lake.

She loved to swim and was there at Conesus Lake when her father built the family cottage in the late 1920’s. She spent many summers at the cottage and enjoyed her early morning coffee on the front porch sitting at the card table while watching the sun sparkle like diamonds on the water. Pat enjoyed leaving her shoes on the shoreline and paddling out in her kayak without a care in the world. Her many neighbors at Conesus were often astonished as she would swim upwards of a quarter mile or longer in either direction just for the love of it. She loved to fish and hunt, once taking a ten point buck on the family farm near Towlesville. The Depression Era certainly made an impact on her lifestyle as she recycled, made clothes by hand, enjoyed playing cards, cared for others, and especially loved her family.

Pat was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. She was also a former member of the Home Bureau.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Bob, on May 8, 1999 after nearly 54 years of marriage; her six brothers, Raymond, Joseph, Daniel (Ann), Martin “Bud” (Helen), William (Grace), and Harold Dailey; also, her two sisters, Dorothy (Nelson) Shevalier and Mary Lucille Kendall (Bill) Krietz.

Her loving surviving family includes her seven children, William K. Young, Capt. USN Ret. Of Oak Harbor, WA., James R. (Linda) Young of Orchard Park, Charles B. (Beth) Young of Hornell, Robert P. (Martha) Young of Almond, Patricia E. Cregan of Hornell, Mary E. (Chauncey) Watches of Bath and Karen I. (Don) Canty of Naperville, IL.; her 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; also, her two sisters-in-law, Lois Dailey of Batavia and Jean Young of Canisteo; as well as many nieces and nephews.
