Paul A. Stewart, of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Paul A. Stewart, 89, of State Route 36, passed away Wednesday morning (Nov. 22, 2017) at Highland Hospital following a brief illness.

Paul was born December 6, 1927 in Almond, to the late Charles and Polly (Rossman) Stewart.

Paul was a lifelong resident of the Canisteo Valley and had worked as a Hornell City Bus Driver where he met the love of his life “Lolly” (Lucy Dinardo). On October 2, 1948 in Hornell, (69 years ago) he married Lolly and they moved to the town of Rathbone to work together on their dairy farm. They finally settled in South Canisteo where they owned and operated Colonial Bills Creek Farm, along with raising a family of five children, before retiring and selling the farm to their son Mike.

Paul drove school bus for the Canisteo Central School district for 17 years and upon retiring from there, drove bus for the Hornell Area Transit (HAT) buses for 23 years. He was always one to keep busy and continued to help his son, Mike, on the family farm. Paul was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the company of his family and friends on any one of his hunting or fishing exertions. He particularly enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie during the deer hunting season, and whenever he could, pass on his knowledge and love of the outdoors to his family and friends. Paul was always ready for a good card game of euchre or penny poker too. His presence and friendship will be missed.

In addition to his wife Lolly of Canisteo, Paul is survived by three sons, Paul F. “Sonny” (Cindy) Stewart of Hornell, Michael Stewart and William (Terri) Stewart all of Canisteo. Two daughters, Mary Stewart (Casey) of Dansville and Patricia “Patty” (John) Peisher of Canisteo. 16 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son, Paul Stewart, Jr. four brothers, Ellery, Lloyd, Linford and Harold Stewart and two sisters, May Carnes and Doris Welty.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm Saturday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where funeral and committal service will take place Sunday at 1:00 pm. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Churchyard Cemetery in Rexville.
