Peggy Ann Stewart, of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Peggy Ann Stewart, 60, of State Route 36, passed away Monday (Sept. 11, 2017) at her home surrounded by the love and care of her family. after a courageous battle with cancer.

Peggy was born October 30, 1956 in Hornell to Ben and Doris (Wilson) Ray. Forty-one years ago, on June 26, 1976 in Rexville she married Michael “Mike” Stewart who survives and resides in Canisteo.

Peggy was a graduate of Canisteo Central School class of 1974. For 10 years she worked with special needs children at the Canisteo Elementary School as a teacher’s aide and was very dedicated to the needs of these children. She was also a bus monitor and dispatcher at the school bus garage. Peggy was first and foremost a house wife and mother who devoted her life to her children and grandchildren and who also helped her husband on the family farm and Stewart’s Plants and Produce. Her home and heart were always open to her kid’s friends, where they were always made to feel as if they were a part of her family, welcomed and loved.

In addition to her husband Mike of Canisteo, Peggy is survived by three sons, Anthony “Tony” (Jennifer) Stewart and their children Christopher and Danielle, Timothy (Amy) Stewart, their children, Jackson and Ava, Joseph (Mary) Stewart, children Josephine and Leo all living in Canisteo. One daughter, Christina (Marcus) Norton and their children, Mikayla and Macrae also of Canisteo. Peggy is also survived by a brother, Walter Alan (Caroline) Ray of Canisteo, three sisters, JoAnne (John) Wulforst of Hornell, Betty (Robert) Charles of Hornell, Terri Brown of Round Lake and twin sister Patti Jo (Michael) Ordway of Hornell, Several nieces and nephews.

Peggy was predeceased by three brothers, Dick, Robert and Benjamin Ray.

At Peggy’s request, there will be no calling hours or service. A time of remembrance and celebration of her life will take place Saturday (Sept. 16) from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the family farm on Route 36 in Canisteo.

In lieu of flowers and memorial contributions, as a remembrance of Peggy, she would like you to take your children, grandchildren or any child, on a memorable adventure that will last a life time. Take them to the creek, park, bake cookies, ride a bike with them, anything that will commemorate a memory. And for every moment with them keep it close to your heart.
