CAMPBELL, NY – Arkport Central’s Xavier Zaldivar would probably have preferred to have gone about business without all the fanfare.
Nevertheless, just minutes before the PA announcer at the Steuben County Athletic Association Track and Field Championships held at the Campbell-Savona Central School athletic complex told the crowd about the Arkport senior’s potential record-breaking endeavor, he cleared a height of 12-10 in the pole vault, establishing a new school record in the event. Zaldivar had three cracks at moving the SCAA Championship standard up to 12-11, but failed to do so on each attempt. His final attempt appeared to be the closest, narrowly missing as the vaulter’s right arm knocked the bar off the posts after he had already made his way over the top of it.
Hunter Clark, meanwhile, refused to remain in the shadows. Clark – an Alfred-Almond senior – helped lead the Eagles to the boys’ SCAA title, claiming the top spot in three individual events. Clark won the 1,600 (4:44), the 3,200 (10:16.9) and the 3,000 steeplechase (10:14.2).
Addison was second in the boys’ standings, followed by Arkport/Canaseraga.
On the girls’ side, Jaiden Weitzel captured four individual Ws on the day, guiding the Canisteo-Greenwood Lady Redskins to a first-place effort. C-G ended up over 25 points ahead of runner-up Alfred-Almond and more than 50 points ahead of Addison, which rounded out the top 3.
Weitzel bested the field in the 100 (13.1), 200 (27.6), long jump (16-2) and triple jump (35-2).
Next week’s Section V meets will be held at Marion (Class D, Friday night) and Lyons (Class C, Saturday).
