COHOCTON-The Reverend Douglas James Carroll, 84, of Cohocton, NY passed away at his Citra, FL residence on Sunday (Aug. 6, 2017).
Doug was born March 7, 1933 in Princeton, NJ. He graduated Princeton High School in 1951, Washington & Jefferson College in 1960, the Episcopal Theological School and was ordained into priesthood in 1963. He served as a US Naval Reservist through high scool and college.
Father Doug served parishes in Blairsville and Indiana, PA, Hornell, Aleghany County, and Branchport. Father Doug never retired from the preisthood and still preached until shortly before his death. He had retired, after 20 years of service, from Steuben County Department of Child Protective Services.
Survived by Donna, his wife of 62 years, children, Douglas J. Carroll JR, Rebbeca (Tibby) Carroll, Patricia Parsons and Sarah (Todd) Lewis; 15 grandchildren, 16 great grand children, sisters, Margaret Pazdan and Joyce Moffett, his dog, Kylie, many beloved friends and extended family.
He was preceeded in death by his father, Richard, mother, Ida, brothers, Donald and Richard and daughter, Linda.
Doug was an avid hobbiest throughout his life. Painting, train collecting, woodworking, camping, hunting, fishing, fly tying, baking, bird watching, sugaring, photography and writing, to name a few. He authored a book of daily observations, When Evening Comes, which was published in 2016. He was also known for his love of music and proud of his Scottish heritage.
Doug is best remembered for his care and service to others. His wonderful sense of humor and robust laugh. His joy in having great grand children old enough to have memorable conversations with. The ability to see and appriciate the wonder and beauty in all things in life, his strong faith, kind words, a smiling greeting and warm hugs.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 16, 2017) at Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell.
The family asks in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Music Fund at Christ Episocpal Church, P.O. Box 336, Hornell, N.Y. 14843, to the restoration fund at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 187 W. Lake Road, Branchport, N.Y. 14418 or to Habitat For Humanity, P.O. Box 800, Corning, N.Y. 15830. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at Christ Episcopal Church at the time of the service.
