Richard A. “Dick” Shorts, of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Richard A. “Dick” Shorts, 83, of Maple St. went home to be with the Lord Wednesday (Dec. 9, 2015) at the Bath V.A. Hospital in Bath after an extended illness.

 

Dick was born June 19, 1932 in Meadville, Pa. to George and Martha (Crane) Shorts. On December 19, 1953 in Canisteo, he married the former Beverly Florence who predeceased him in April of 2009. He was also predeceased by two brothers: Jack and James Shorts and a sister Lucille Evingham.

 

Dick was a graduate of Canisteo Central School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving our country proudly during the Korean War, from 1952-56. He was a carpenter by trade and had worked for many years with various local building construction companies. Dick was a quiet man who loved to hunt, particularly foxes, and he also enjoyed fishing with the company of his friends.

 
During his retirement he spent a good share of his free time in his work shop either building something new or fixing something. He was also a member of the Canisteo American Legion.

 

Dick is survived by a daughter Elizabeth “Beth” (James) Knight of Canisteo, 3 grand children: Matthew (Tiffany) Knight, Joshua (Jamie) Knight and Melissa Knight and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother: Ivan (Ruth) Shorts of Jacksonville, Fl. and a brother-in-law: John (Sally) Florence of Canisteo, as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 3-5 pm Saturday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 5:00 pm. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
