Rose Moore, Hornell

December 1, 2013

HORNELL-Rose A. Moore, 84, of Maxwell Ave., passed away early Thursday afternoon (Nov. 28, 2013) at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath, where she was taken after becoming ill at the Steuben County Health Care Facility where she had been a patient for several weeks.

Born in Hornell on Aug. 20, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Angelo and Mary Mess Cilono. In Sept. of 1950 she was married in Hornell to Robert Moore, who predeceased her on April 5, 1983 after 33 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her two brothers, Robert Meyers and Freddie Cilono and her two sisters and their husbands, Marion and Russ Cairone and Helen and Chuck Smith.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Rose was a graduate f Hornell High School, Class of 1947. As a military spouse, she accompanied her husband Bob to overseas and stateside assignments. After retirement from the military, Rose and Bob and their sons, Tim and Mark, operated Moore’s Bakery on Erie Ave. from 1968 to 1985 and they also owned and operated a restaurant on Main Street in Hornell. She was employed by the Hornell City School District as a substitute teacher’s aide from 1986 to 2005.

Rose would often be seen walking throughout Hornell in all kinds of weather and even though friends would kindly offer her a ride she would politely refuse and say, “I’m fine, it not that bad out here.” She loved to exercise, read and especially enjoyed visiting her friends daily at Burger King and attending various exercise and swim classes at the Hornell YMCA.

She was a very devout communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and most recently at St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell, where she would attend Mass twice a day; and would also visit the Perpetual Adoration Chapel of the parish.

Rose loved her faith, her family, especially her grandchildren, as well as her many friends.
Her loving family includes her five children, Cynthia (Terry) Corner of Ashburn, VA, Timothy (Gail) Moore and Mark (Patricia) Moore all of Hornell; Pam (Jeff) Davies of Albion and Thomas (Dina) Moore of Brunswick, OH; her eight grandchildren, Samuel and Jacob Moore, Kyle, Dustin and Bram Davies and Matthew, Bradley and Emma Moore; her brother, Thomas (Samantha) Cilono of Walnut Creek, Ca; her two sisters, Betty Carr and Elsie Cabral of Vestal; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to express their appreciation to all of her caregivers during the last year at Updyke’s Willow Ridge in Hornell, especially her roommate, Neola; also the wonderful people at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. and Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the Hornell YMCA Pool Fund, 12 Center St., Hornell or to the Hornell Public Library, 64 Genesee St., Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
