HORNELL-Stanley A. “Stan” Hill, 84, of Platt St., passed away, surrounded by his loving family, early Friday evening (June 15, 2018) at Elderwood at Hornell, after a short illness.
Born in Hornell on May 28, 1934, he was the son of the late Gerald and Doris (Webb) Hill. On June 21, 1958 he was married at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell to his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Margaret Sexsmith, who predeceased him on Nov. 22, 2006, after 48 years of marriage; they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this Thursday (June 21, 2018). Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his daughter, Judy Daly in 2015.
A resident of Hornell for most of his life, Stan was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1953. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1954 to his honorable discharge in 1958 and was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. From 1958 to 1962 he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves and also with the U.S. Army Reserves from 1973-1974.
Stan began working with his father as an independent contractor before he became employed in the Maintenance Dept. of St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell. He eventually became employed in the Maintenance Dept. of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and retired as Director of the Physical Plant at Alfred University College of Ceramics after 20 years of employment.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where he also volunteered his time. His other memberships include the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) a Third-degree member of the Hornell Council No. 243, Knights of Columbus and a member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell. Until recently Stan also served as Commissioner of Public Works for the City of Hornell.
An avid golfer, he also enjoyed travelling and loved to spend time with his family, especially at their cottage on Loon Lake that he has owned for the past 22 years; he always considered it as “a little piece of heaven.” Stan was active with the Loon Lake Association and served on the Weed Harvester Committee.
He will be remembered most of all for being a loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; who was the #1 fan at his grandchildren’s sporting events.
His loving family includes his three daughters, Linda (Scott) Jersey of Rochester, Nancy (Thomas) Freeland of Henrietta and Mary Pat (Michael) Hodinger of Cazenovia; his son-in-law, Randy Daly of Penn Yan; his 12 grandchildren, Jennifer Mullen (Jerry Ross), Justin Hammond, Sara Hammond, Alexis Jersey, Mark (Katie) Jersey, Derek (Kari) Jersey, Heather (Justin) Rambo, Megan (Cody) Roy, Kyle Daly, Katie Daly, Maggie Hodinger and Morgan Hodinger; also several great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 4- 7 p.m. Wednesday (June 20, 2018) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday (June 21, 2018). Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
The United States flag and the Navy flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of Stan’s military service.
