ALBANY, NY – Assemblyman PHil Palmesano had put out a statement, criticizing Governor Cuomo, saying that the governor’s license plate contest was a distraction from additional fees for new plates. Democrat state officials responded, by pointing to Vehicle Traffic Law 401:
VTL 401 establishes a $25 fee for the issuance of a set of license plates.
VTL 401(3) . . An additional fee, not to exceed twenty-five dollars, shall be paid to the commissioner whenever a set of reflectorized number plates is issued for any vehicle for which a registration fee is normally charged . . .
Furthermore, 10 years is the national industry standard for plates needing to be replaced (The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators – AAMVA – recommends a license plate replacement cycle and that it not exceed 10 years), and the new design will make them far more compatible with cashless tolling systems going up statewide.
