Steuben County May Start Rewarding Responsible Drivers

April 13, 2017

HORNELL, NY – A letter from the Steuben County Sherriffs Dept was read to the Hornell Board of Public Safety met Thursday Morning suggesting that a Drive Safe/Shop Local program be created within the county.

The new program will be a joint effort between the Sheriff, Bath, Hornell, and Corning police departments in which responsible drivers are rewarded with coupons or discounts from local businesses.

Law enforcement, partnering with the local business districts, will work to create a program in which safe drivers are rewarded and encouraged to shop in those districts, by the use of coupons or redeemable certificates.

During road-checks in the Bath, Corning and Hornell areas, in addition to issuing summons to violators, Deputies and police officers will recognize and reward drivers who are operating vehicles in full compliance with the NYS vehicle and traffic law. They will then provide thee driver with a coupon or discount to be used at participating local businesses.

Police chief Ted Murray commented that it looks like a great idea, but in order to make it work funding and cooperation of local businesses must be secured.
