Vernon Travis, of Canisteo

Canisteo, NY – Vernon A. Travis, 93, of 117 Greenwood Street, passed away Tuesday (March 25, 2014) at the Hornell Gardens.

Born in Hornell, January 13, 1921, the son of Clarence and Edith Acker Travis, he had resided in Hartsville during his early life, moving to Canisteo in 1948. He was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, Class of 1939 and served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1941-1942.

Vernon was an employee of the former Sears Roebuck in Hornell from 1948 until his retirement in 1986. Following his retirement, Vernon was employed at the former K-Mart in Hornell and enjoyed working in his shop, but most of all, enjoyed his family. He also spent many active years at the Canisteo Wesleyan Church and the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, choir director, and was also a member of the Board of Directors at Family Life Ministries. Vernon especially enjoyed playing duets with his wife Ruth and in the earlier years, he enjoyed playing Santa Clause.

He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Elva Chironna.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Battles Travis to whom he was married in 1944, his seven children; Sara Travis of Canisteo, Martha (Stephen) Thompson of Lititz PA, Susan (LeWayne) Colwell of Windsor, Anita (Stephen) Cowell of Windsor, John (Donna) Travis of Pulaski VA, James (Lori) Travis of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, and Deborah Travis of Howard, daughter-in-law, Karen Travis of Bath, 16 Grandchildren and 19 Great Grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend services at the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church on Saturday at 4 PM. Rev. Daniel Pickering will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
