Why I-86 Between Exits 33 And 34 Is Closed Today

January 26, 2018

Statement from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State DOT:

The New York State Department of Transportation announced today that I-86 East between Exit 33, Almond and Exit 34, Hornell will be closed from approximately 9am until 8pm Friday, January 26th.

This road closure is required to allow placement of concrete barrier to protect a portion of the I-86 East bridge over State Route 36 at the Hornell Interchange that was damaged by an accident. During the closure motorists travelling eastbound will leave the highway at Exit 33, Almond; travel 21 North to Hornell, then State Route 36 North to Exit 34 where they will continue onto I-86 East.

Motorists may encounter flaggers, lane shifts, and will experience travel delays. It is imperative that motorists remember to drive carefully through the detour.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
