Winifred M. “Winnie” Jessup, formerly of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Winifred M. “Winnie” Jessup, 94, formerly of Nicholson Rd. passed away Tuesday (Feb. 7, 2017) at Hornell Gardens where she had resided since December of 2016.

Winnie was born September 13, 1922 in Wellsboro, Pa. to the late Lewis and Cecelia ( Markowicz) Van Gorder. On November 24, 1945 in Smethport, Pa., she married Edward P. Jessup who predeceased her in August of 2011. She was also predeceased by a son Leonard C. Jessup in September of 2001, a daughter-in-law Sheila M. Jessup in June of 2005 and a brother Lewis Van Gorder.

Winnie was a graduate of Wellsboro High School and a 1945 graduate of St.
Joseph’s School of Nursing in Elmira where she earned her registered nursing degree. She was employed at various nursing facilities throughout New York State and upon settling in Canisteo, she was charge nurse at Hornell Gardens for a period of three years. After retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and split their Winter months at homes in Florida and Texas.

Survivors include a son Lewis (Nancy) Jessup of Dexter, NY, two daughters:
Alice (Marshal) Crum of Havana, FL. and Helen (George) Sawyer of Canisteo and 9 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from noon-2:00pm Saturday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. Canisteo, N.Y. where funeral and committal service will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 2 pm. Burial will be in East Charleston Cemetery, Whitneyville, Pa.

Memorial contributions in Winnie’s name may be made to St. Joseph’s Alumni Association, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Elmira, N.Y. 14901.
