Wynona C. Nesbit, of North Hornell

NORTH HORNELL-Wynona C. Nesbit, 90, of 7 Linwood Ave., passed away Wednesday (August 20, 2014) at her home.

Born in Mansfield, PA, August 15, 1924, the daughter of Herbert and Margaret Petticrew Cleveland, she moved to Hornell with her family in 1934 when her father established Cleveland Truck Lines. Wynona graduated from Hornell High School in 1942 and on February 6, 1944 she married Burton Nesbit who predeceased her on April 17, 2007. Wynona enjoyed being a home maker for her husband who was an engineer on the former Erie Railroad. Together they enjoyed 46 happy years at their home on Keuka Lake.

Wynona was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hornell, becoming a member in 1936. She was a member of Ivanhoe Chapter # 160, Order of Eastern Star and was currently the Chaplain for the Chapter. She was a former member of the Order of Amaranth in Hornell. In 1962, she joined the Capstan Card Club and was a member of the Hornell Alumni Association.

She was predeceased by her parents and her husband Burton.

She is survived by her half brother, Jack (Sherry) W. Bailey of Odessa, Texas, several cousins including Sally Cleveland of Hornell, her sister-in-law, Mary Nesbit of Bath, and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her long time companion and caregiver, Gene Garrison of Hartsville, and special friends who were a great help to her in recent years; Jean Burdell, Linda Mehlenbacher, Teresa Bender and Joyce Hollister as well as Larry and Joyce Clark and family of Jasper, and last but not least, her canine friend “Lacey”.

The family will be present to receive friends on Sunday, August 24, 2014, at the Bender – Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell from 2PM until 4 PM at which time an Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held followed by her funeral service at 4:15 PM with Rev. Cedric Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.
