Reed’s Statement About Appeals Court Map Ruling

April 30, 2022

From Congressman Tom Reed: “We are glad to see the State Court of Appeals threw out the Democrats’ gerrymandered congressional maps. The people of New York State voted for a fair redistricting process, not for Democrats to use their one-party rule of Albany to tip the scales in their favor. We applaud the 4 Judges who chose the will of the people over partisan politics.”

In other news about the maps, Steuben County Court Judge Pat McAllister says, the maps have to be finished by and turned into Steuben County Court by May 18, and then the maps will be made public on May 20.

Judge mcallister also says, the primary will for state senate and congress will be held on august 23A.

Alfred Univ Gets Big Contract From The U.S. Army

April 29, 2022

ALFRED, NY – From A.U. – Alfred University has been awarded a $13.5 million federal contract to support a joint project with the U.S. Army to conduct advanced manufacturing and characterization research of high temperature materials. The contract provides $2.7 million per year for five years, from 2022-27, to fund joint research between Alfred University and DEVCOM (U.S. Army Capabilities Development Command), Army Research Laboratory (ARL).

Research will focus on improving the performance of ceramic materials used in weapons (i.e., cruise missiles), which must be able to withstand the extreme temperatures that result from traveling at hypersonic speeds. Due to their high-temperature performance, toughness, and light weight, ceramic materials are a necessary component of hypersonic weapons systems.

Gabrielle Gaustad ’04, dean of the Inamori School of Engineering, in partnership with key faculty and support from the team at the Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology, led efforts to identify top research priorities with the ARL and design the scope of work for this project.

Scott Misture ’90, Ph.D. ‘95, Inamori Professor, materials science and engineering, will serve as principal investigator. Other participating faculty include S.K. Sundaram, Inamori Professor, materials science and engineering; Holly Shulman ‘87, professor of ceramic engineering; Junjun Ding, assistant professor, materials science and engineering; Yiquan Wu, Inamori Professor, ceramic engineering; Kun Wang, assistant professor, materials science and engineering; and Junpeng Zhan, assistant professor, renewable energy engineering.

Undergraduate and graduate students will have the opportunity to participate in the research funded under this contract.

Much of the research will be conducted in the Center for High Temperature Characterization (CHTC) at Alfred University. Currently lacking in most hypersonic materials research is the ability to examine the materials during processing/sintering or post-sintering at high temperatures under simulated operational environments. The CHTC—which was completed in 2014 with $4 million in state funding and has the equipment needed to investigate the physical, microstructural, and chemical changes of hypersonic materials at various temperatures and under controlled atmospheres—played a significant role in Alfred University receiving the $13.5 million contract.

Alfred University has been deeply involved in the field of materials for high-performance aviation for many decades. From glass strengthening to withstand bird strikes to magnetic ceramics for microwave communication, our University has long been a valuable, leading-edge collaborator with the Department of Defense, Federal Aviation Administration, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In the 1980s, for example, researchers at Alfred University helped develop heat-resistant materials used in external tiles on the Space Shuttle.

Hornell Fire Chief: Spring Statement About Recreational Fires

April 29, 2022

With the arrival of warmer weather and the availability of outdoor fireplaces, more and more residents are spending time in their backyard around a campfire or barbeque.

It is important to remember that although the City of Hornell does allow recreational fires, there are regulations; to ensure public safety and that the fire or smoke does not become offensive to other residents of the neighborhood. We live in this community together and need to respect all of our neighbors, please understand that there are people who have medical conditions such as asthma and respiratory conditions that can be harsh on them so they cannot enjoy their summer.

Guidelines regarding recreational fires within the City limits are as follows:

SAFETY MUST ALWAYS BE FOLLOWED

 The fire must be contained in a chiminea-type fireplace or fire pit with a spark arresting cover. No homemade pit it must be safe containment encloser.
 No fire shall be more than 2 feet in height
 The fire must be a minimum of 15 feet away from any combustible fence or structure.
 Fires must consist of either charcoal or untreated, seasoned, dry, wood (wet wood, fresh cut wood, painted or stained wood creates smoky conditions and should not be used.)
 There is absolutely no burning of garbage, paper, trash, yard waste, or construction debris.
 There must be a means of extinguishment readily available such as a garden hose, 4A rated fire extinguisher, or pile of dirt or sand with a shovel.
 The Fire must be constantly attended by competent adult supervision until fire is extinguished.
 If the fire becomes offensive or objectionable to the neighbors due to smoke, odor, health concerns, or a hazardous condition, we will ask you to extinguish the fire.

The Fire Department is called often to check on outdoor fires by neighbors who are bothered by the smoke or odor from the fire. Even if all the other conditions above are met; if the smoke is bothering another resident we are going to ask for the fire to be extinguished.

Thank you

Area Residents Make A Trip To Vietnam Wall In Washington

April 28, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – From Hornell resident Kimbee Wood:

After 10 months of planning, fund raising, and spreading the word, the Hornell VFW Post 2250, took Vietnam Veterans, and/or their spouses or family members to Washington DC, to see the Vietnam Memorial as well as the World War II memorial, the Korean War memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Navy Memorial & Museum. It was the VFW’s way of thanking the Vietnam veterans and letting them know they were not forgotten. The best part, was they didn’t have to pay to go. All monies were raised so, the veterans didn’t have to pay for the trip.

They left Tuesday morning and arriving home late Wednesday night.
