BATH, NY – The jury delivered their verdict today, to Steuben County Judge Chauncey Watches. “Not guilty on all charges,” was what the jury told Watches.
Dustin Drake was accused of being the driver in an October 2019 accident, that claimed the lives of four people in their 20’s, when a vehicle struck a tree. Prosecutors argued that Drake was the driver, the defense maintained that Drake was a backseat passenger.

BATH, NY – The verdict has not been decided yet in the Dustin Drake Case. The jury has been deliberating, on and off, since late last week. A court official told us that Judge Chauncey Watches sent the jury home at 9:30am on Tuesday morning, and the jury will be back to continue deliberations today. Dustin Drake is the Prattsburgh man who is accused of being the driver in a fatal DWI that claimed the lives of four people when a vehicle struck a tree in Pulteney, in October of 2019.

Statement from Congressman Nick Langworthy on President Biden’s State of the Union
“President Biden had the opportunity to speak truthfully to the American people tonight and chart a new course for our nation, but all we heard was the same hollow rhetoric of the last two years. Our nation is hurting–people are struggling to make ends meet under crushing food and energy costs, lawlessness is gripping our cities and communities are being destroyed by the scourge of fentanyl pouring through our open borders.
Our weak and feckless foreign policy has had devastating impacts on the world stage. Just days ago, China broke international law by violating our air space and the President didn’t even devote a single sentence to this act of aggression in his 72-minute speech.
Americans feel that their government is too big and too detached to be accountable to the taxpayers who fund it. They aren’t wrong. I was disappointed the President took the opportunity in his speech to knowingly promote lies about Republican positions but I hope he’s serious about working with the House Majority because that is what the country is demanding. BATH, NY – The Steuben County Public Health Department in partnership with Steuben County Community Services, Steuben County 911, and the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee are bringing awareness to opioid overdoses in Steuben County. Monthly updates will be shared on the known number of overdoses, fatalities, and Narcan administrations.
“Public Health and our partners are in the business of saving lives and working to keep people healthy,” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “Opioids are a current threat to the health and safety of our residents, with known overdoses more than doubling from 2020 to 2022. By raising awareness about the reality our county is facing and through sharing resources, we hope to start reversing that trend.”
Steuben County began utilizing the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program (ODMAP) in 2020. ODMAP is used by local first responders to input suspected overdoses, fatalities, and instances of Narcan administration. While not all incidences that occur in Steuben are likely to be included, e.g. those that occur without medical intervention, a better idea of what is happening in Steuben is captured through the program.
In 2021, 246 suspected overdoses, 13 fatalities, and 102 administrations of Narcan were reported in ODMAP. In 2022, 289 suspected overdoses, 12 fatalities, and 92 administrations of Narcan were reported in ODMAP. In January 2023, 22 suspected overdoses, 1 fatality, and 7 administrations of Narcan were reported in ODMAP, which is on trend with last year’s numbers.
Local support is available. Steuben County Substance Abuse Services (SCASAS) offers outpatient services in Bath (607-664-2156), Corning (607-937-6201), and Hornell (607-324-2483) as well as after hour services (607-937-7800). CASA Trinity in Hornell (607-282-5200) and Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath offer detox and inpatient services as well. Residents are also encouraged to call 211 for other local supports.

Statement from NYCOM Executive Director Peter Baynes on Governor Hochul’s 2023-24 Executive Budget Proposal
“It is difficult to fathom that an Executive Budget with a $7 billion increase in spending, proposed by a Governor with an oft-stated strong belief in local governments, fails to invest one additional dime in our cities, villages, counties and towns. Abandoning local governments, as this budget largely does, will only make New York a less attractive place to live and work. To make matters even worse, the Governor also mistakenly lays New York’s housing shortage problem at the feet of local officials and proposes to allow the State to override local zoning and land use decisions. Holding municipalities solely responsible for housing growth ignores the fact that not every community has the developable land or buildings, necessary infrastructure, sufficient demand or builder appetite to meet an arbitrary housing growth threshold set by a state government that cannot possibly know the needs and conditions of individual communities.”
Hornell Mayor John Buckley agreed and said, “The Governor’s Executive Budget is an bloated slap in the face to taxpayers. The Governor plans to increase spending by 7 billion dollars and once again, for the 15th consecutive year, not increase AIM funding to cities and villages despite a record increase for school districts. With runaway inflation negatively impacting costs in every area, the needs of local governments are again tossed aside and ignored.”
Mayor Buckley continued, “However, the most egregious insult to taxpayers is the inexcusable 1 BILLION dollars in the Executive Budget for health care, shelter, and other services for illegal immigrants.”

From State Police:
On Saturday February 4th, 2023, Troopers from SP North Hornell responded to a rollover accident on State Route 36 in the Town of Hornellsville. Troopers subsequently arrested James E. Nelson, age 50 of Hornell, for Driving While Intoxicated, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 4th Degree, a Class C Felony.
Nelson was processed at SP North Hornell and transported to the Steuben County Jail for arraignment.

BATH – The Steuben County Public Health Department became aware of 23 unreported COVID-related deaths through a review of death certificates. This new information brings the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Steuben County to 332.
As noted in previous releases, the COVID-19 related deaths that are reported only come from trusted sources, such as hospitals, nursing homes or via death certificates where COVID-19 is listed as a cause of death.
The deaths occurred between December 4, 2021 and January 12, 2023. Ten females and 13 males died between the ages of 52 and 97. The individuals were residents of the City of Corning (1), City of Hornell (2), Town of Bath (1), Town of Campbell (1), Town of Caton (1), Town of Corning (2), Town of Hornellsville (1), Town of Troupsburg (1), Town of Urbana (1), Town of Wayland (1), Village of Arkport (1), Village of Bath (5), Village of Cohocton (1), and Village of North Hornell (4).
“Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of all those who passed,” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “It is important to share all information related to COVID that we have for residents to make the most informed decisions about their own health. COVID vaccines and boosters remain the most important weapon in fighting severe illness and death related to COVID-19. Call our office to schedule an appointment.”
