Hornell School Superintendent Jeremy Palotti tells WLEA News that he has heard from the New York State officials, on the issue of the team name Red Raiders.
Palotti says that because Hornell does not have now, and never did have in the past, any Native American imagery, that Hornell does not have to change or drop the name Red Raiders.

CANISTEO, NY – Canisteo-Greenwood is still narrowing down new names for the team name to replace the mascot, “Redskins”. School Superintendent Tom Crook says, as soon as they know what the mascot will be, the school district will have to get new uniforms for all of the school teams. Also, Crook says that Canisteo-Greenwood might sell the current uniforms as a way of making money to pay for the new uniforms.

HORNELL – Joseph F. Cieslak, 76, of Hornell, NY passed on to Heaven, Thursday (May 18, 2023). He died unexpectedly at home after a long battle with COPD.
He was born on December 9, 1946 in Hornell NY to Francis and Dolores (Vose) Cieslak. Joe graduated from Hornell High School and was a lifelong resident. He was a member of St. Ann s Catholic Church in his earlier years.
He loved the sport of baseball and continued playing throughout the years. He coached Little League for the American Legion. His son, Joey played on this team and in1981, his father led this team to first place in the National League Championship. He also was an umpire for many years.
Joe was employed by Foster Wheeler in Dansville, NY as a welder until 1986 when he accepted a local job at Morrison Knudson and then Amerail building subway cars. He retired from Alstom. There he worked as a Quality Supervisor & Welding Inspector, being certified as a CWI/CWE. His work sent him to many US cities and around the world. After retirement, he was contracted by Bombardier as a welding inspector. Virginkar & Associates out of Boston employed him for several years. He taught and qualified workers as Certified Welders. He was a member of the American Welding Society. He was proud of his work in keeping high quality standards of procedures and policies. He was pleased when a contract was finally completed.
He was a member of the Association Club and served on the board of directors. Joe and his father started a collection of postcards and pictures mainly of the Hornell area. At one time, Joe had one of largest collections in Hornell and he loved to share his collection with others.
He watched Jeopardy nightly. He enjoyed bowling, camping at Skybrook, dancing (jigger bug), writing poems for different events for family and friends, playing horseshoes shooting “six packs” and playing slo-pitch in the Men’s League on the Medics team. He was a devoted lifelong fan of the NY Yankees, Cleveland Browns, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He loved to tell jokes and making people laugh. He enjoyed taking daily walks to the park with his dog, Eli.
Joe will be missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Susan (Hunt) Cieslak who he married in 1993; his son, Joey Cieslak of South Carolina; two daughters, Andrea (Richard Daley) Cieslak of Canandaigua, NY and Angela (Thomas) Panter of Virginia. He adored his five amazing grandchildren, McKenna Cieslak, Kylie and Jaxson Panter and Charlie and Samuel Daley. Also survived by his sister, Dolores (Walter) Canfield, as well as their children, Christine (Orlando) Monaco, Dan (Susan) Canfield and Thomas (Veronica) Canfield. Survived by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. TUESDAY (May 23, 2023) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. WEDNESDAY (May 24, 2023), with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Committal services and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Hornell Little League.

The Hornell Police Department will be participating in the Buckle Up NY/ Click It or Ticket campaign which runs May 22-June 4. The campaign is designed to encourage drivers and passengers that buckling up saves lives. Hornell Police will deploy officers to enforce occupant restraint laws throughout the campaign
Please take a few extra seconds to make sure you and your passengers are buckled up. It’s the single easiest thing you can do to protect yourself during a crash.
The Buckle Up NY/ Click It or Ticket is funded by a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

“The City of Hornell will be milling Shawmut Industrial Road from Thacher Street to Shawmut Park on today, this portion of the road will be closed to all thru traffic during this time and will re-open as soon as milling is complete.
“We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation and understanding while we make these necessary improvements to our City Streets.”
STEUBEN COUNTY, NY – This past Friday night in Bath, law enforcement officials from across the region gathered for the Annual Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony. They honored the 32 officers from across the area, who have died in the line of duty. There was also the laying of memorial wreaths, and two patriotic songs, the National Anthem and America The Beautiful, were sung by high school students.
Former Congressman Joe Sempolinski, who was present for the event, said the following words: “We take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion.”

From Sheriff Todd Baxter: Juveniles Detained in Stolen Vehicle Case – Four Arrested – One Remanded to Secure Detention.
Penfield, NY – The Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Crown Oak Drive in the Town
of Penfield at 4:18am, Saturday morning, for the report of people breaking into cars. A witness saw the suspects get into a blue Hyundai and leave towards Penfield Road. Deputies promptly located the suspect vehicle and discovered it was stolen. A brief pursuit ensued, and deputies were able to stop the vehicle utilizing stop sticks. All occupants were detained and identified as juveniles. Deputies found multiple vehicles damaged in the area of Oak Drive.
Two 16-year-olds, a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old were arrested and charged with: Criminal Possession of Stolen Property (Class A-Misdemeanor) Deputies transported the 14-year-old to the Monroe County Children’s Detention Center and issued the other three juvenile appearance tickets before releasing them to their guardians. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are forthcoming

WASHINGTON, DC – “Environmental Protection Agency rulings, they remove the investment opportunities in cleaner use of natrual gas,” said Congressman Nick Langworthy, during a House hearing on the subject yesterday. “It appears that these (EPA) rulings send a message: electric cars are the winners and internal combustion engines are the losers.” The New 23rd house member also said, electric car makers, don’t want AM Radio in the new vehicles either. “The electrical vehicle manufacturers, they’re actuallly removing AM radio functionality from these vehicles,” Langworthy stated.
