Palmesano: Hospital Deal is Positive News

March 5, 2015

Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R, Corning) called the news of St. James Board of Directors approving a deal with UR Medicine in Rochester “very positive news.” Palmesano says the deal is moving in the direction we were all hoping for. “With the inpatient services being included there at St. James, it’s good news for the residents, not only of the City of Hornell, but the surrounding Hornell area community. They’ll be able to provide good quality health care that the region deserves.”

Calling it a “team effort”, the assemblyman also noted that it was a pleasure to work with Mayor Shawn Hogan, Deputy Mayor John Buckley, the Hornell City Council, Senator Tom O’Mara, Assemblyman Bill Nojay, Assemblyman Joe Giglio, and Congressman Tom Reed.

Palmesano also thanked those who signed petitions and wrote letters to Albany.

Mayor Hogan: New Deal Makes It Less Of A Burden On Ambulance Crews

March 4, 2015

HORNELL, NY – Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan now says that because of the plans to have 20 beds at St. James Hospital (10 longer stay beds, 10 observation beds) and also because of the plans to have full surgery at St. James, it appears that there will be less of a burden on the Hornell Fire Department’s ambulance crew.

There were concerns voiced publicly, by both the mayor and the Hornell Fire Chief Dan Smith.  Both stated that there would be many additional ambulance runs (possibly helicopter in cases where it was not usually required) to hospitals in Dansville and Wellsville, if there was not adequate medical care in the future, in Hornell.

Both Hogan and Smith were very critical of the original New Vision plans, and it appears that the pressure they put on the hospital has paid off, because now St. James is going to have more in terms of health care (20 beds and a full surgical wing) than was originally being discussed.

Hogan will be the guest on the Thursday WLEA Newsmaker Show, to talk more about the hospital situation.

Hogan: What Services Will Be Part of the St James Future

March 4 2015

HORNELL, NY – Mayor Shawn Hogan says if the hospital moves to a new building, it will have to be a bigger facility than originally planned for, because there will be more services.

So what services will be available?

Hogan says it will be the following:

the nursing home, the dialysis services, the cancer clinic, an E.R., urgent care, labs, diagnostic, x-ray, ultra-sound, full surgery, will be a part of the future of St. James. There will be almost 2 dozen beds and you will be able to stay for 48 hours.

On maternity services, according to Hogan, we still don’t know for sure.

Mayor Hogan will be on tomorrow’s Newsmaker show after the 8:30 morning news on AM 1480 WLEA, to talk more about the hospital situation.  The show will be archived online afterwards.

Congressman Tom Reed Issues Statement About the Hospital Deal

March 4, 2015

Congressman Tom Reed has issued the following statement:

“It’s good news for the Hornell area. We have been engaged with hospital administrators and local elected officials to fight for in-patient services to be part of the solution. The plan adopted by the board preserves as much local care and access as possible for rural patients. That is something we all care about.

“I thank Mayor Hogan, Deputy Mayor Buckley, Senator O’Mara, Assemblyman Nojay, and Assemblyman Palmesano for their tireless efforts on behalf of Hornell. This has truly been a community effort that we can be proud of.”

St. James Issues Statement About The Deal

March 4, 2015

HORNELL, NY – St. James Hospital issued the following statement last night, which came into our email box
at 11:54pm Tuesday:

St. James Mercy Hospital Board
Opens Door for Continuation of Inpatient Services

Board action reaffirms partnership with UR Medicine

HORNELL, N.Y. (March 4, 2015) – Following receipt of two new competitive proposals, the St. James Mercy Health System board of directors today unanimously re-affirmed its partnership with UR Medicine. As a part of the competitive review, UR Medicine proposed a plan for continuation of limited inpatient medical and surgical services. The plan remains subject to review, approval and funding by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and approval of the University of Rochester Trustees.

“We are delighted to reaffirm our commitment to our dedicated partner in UR Medicine, and we applaud the efforts of community leaders — Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan, in particular — who have fought tirelessly for a sustained inpatient presence,” said Jennifer Sullivan, president and CEO of St. James Mercy Hospital.

St. James Mercy Health first announced its intention to work with Rochester-based UR Medicine on a plan to preserve quality health care services in April 2014. Since its selection, UR Medicine and St. James have worked closely to refine a vision for healthcare in Hornell that builds upon the strength of the region’s healthcare landscape and ensures uninterrupted access to quality healthcare services for the city’s residents.

“Today’s announcement affirms UR Medicine’s commitment to our continued evolution to a sustainable, financially viable healthcare presence for Hornell and the surrounding communities,” said Sullivan. “This commitment comes from the highest levels of the University of Rochester, as evidenced by University President Joel Seligman’s presence at the Board meeting tonight.

“We remain steadfast in our shared commitment to the Hornell community,” said Mark Taubman, M.D., CEO of UR Medicine. “We are energized by the board’s affirmation of our path forward, and by the opportunity to create a lasting health care presence that will serve the community for many years to come.”

“The residents of Hornell deserve robust healthcare services that include inpatient beds,” said Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan. “We most definitely are headed in the right direction, and I will do all I can to support the efforts of St. James and UR Medicine in securing the necessary approvals and funding for this healthcare transformation.”

Hogan And Buckley Glad To Have Deal With Inpatient Beds

March 4, 2015

HORNELL, NY – Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan: “The residents of Hornell deserve robust healthcare services that include inpatient beds,” said Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan. “We most definitely are headed in the right direction, and I will do all I can to support the efforts of St. James and UR Medicine in securing the necessary approvals and funding for this healthcare transformation.”

Hornell Deputy Mayor John Buckley: “I am relieved and excited University of Rochester changed course and decided to retain inpatient beds at St James. This is a tremendous victory for our community. I am also pleased to learn U of R will restudy the need for a maternity ward. With approximately 300 births a year at St James, there definitely is a need.”

St. James Works Out Deal With University Of Rochester/Strong

March 3, 2015

HORNELL, NY – The deal on the future of St. James Hospital has been finalized.

After hearing from both Rochester General and Strong during meetings held on Tuesday, the board of directors at St. James decided to go with Strong Memorial.

According to unnamed sources, the St. James Board of Directors has voted unanimously to go with the University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital,
but with some major concessions from the University of Rochester.

Originally, Strong Memorial had said that there would be no long term care beds when they took control of the hospital. This was a major sticking point with Mayor Shawn Hogan and others who pushed for in-patient beds, and not only a few beds to be kept for patients who were being held overnight, before being transferred to Dansville or Wellsville. Apparently, there will now be 10 observation beds and 10 longer stay beds.

And what about the maternity ward that Strong wished to close originally? University of Rochester/Strong has agreed to restudy that issue.

The full details of what has been worked out will be released in future days and weeks. But for now, what we know is this: as a result of much opposition to shutting down in-patient care, that the U of R has agreed to keep a total of 20 beds, and this is considered to be a major victory by many.
