Rebecca “Becky” D. Smith, of North Hornell

NORTH HORNELL-Rebecca “Becky” D. Smith, 50, of 381 Seneca Rd., North Hornell passed away unexpectedly Saturday afternoon (October 29, 2022) following a lengthy illness. 

Born in Urbana, NY on August 24, 1972, she was the daughter of Melvin Varner and the former Beverly Wolfanger. 
 
Becky grew up in the Cohocton area and was a graduate of Wayland Central School (class of 1990).  
 
She had been employed in the housekeeping department at St. James Mercy Hospital and for many years served as a receptionist for Dr. Nasar Chaudhry 
 
In 2009, Becky decided to further her education and enrolled at Alfred University, majoring in Court Reporting. In 2011, she started a career that she is the proudest of and enlisted in the US Army. She was stationed at Hunter Army Air Field in Savanna, GA. And later deployed to Kuwait where she served for 9 months. When she returned to the United States, she was briefly stationed at Hunter Army Air Field where “specialist” SPC Rebecca served as a computer technician with the Criminal Investigative Division of the US Military. She most recently was stationed at Ft. Belvoir in Washington DC where she retired as a Sergeant.  
 
Becky was a member of the Wayland American Legion and the Hornell. Hobbies & interests include: enjoyed being with friends enjoying the views of Keuka Lake at our local breweries along the wine trail, spending time with her grandchildren was her biggest joy, along with her faith in god that kept her strong. 
 
She was married on August 7, 2011 to Marc M. Smith who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, Gregg Mark of Wayland and Connor Mark (Alissa Brado) of Dansville; her step-daughter, Raven Smith of North Hornell, her father & step-mother, Melvin (Nancy) Varner of Cohocton; her mother & step-father, Beverly (Wilbur) Dunning of NC; her siblings, Heidi Goodman, Bridgett Herndon, Roger Varner, Jim Varner, Jeff Varner and Mark Varner, Jessica Dunning and Michael Whiting several nieces and nephews and her grandchildren Landen and Logan Mark. 
 
The family of Rebecca “Becky” Smith will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 (Noon) until 3:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Memorial Service with military honors will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 3:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. 
 
Becky’s family request that in lieu of flowers, donations of gas cards being accepted and would be donated to Cancer Services of Steuben County. The cards will go to local families fighting cancer to assist them receiving treatments. Donations may be directly made to St. James foundation “cancer services” Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home. 
 
In recognition of Becky’s service to her country as a member of the US Army, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.

Thomas Edward Sheedy, formerly of Hornell

MONETA, VA/HORNELL- Thomas Edward Sheedy, 96, of Moneta, Virginia formerly of Hornell, passed away, Tuesday, (Oct. 25, 2022) at his daughter Patricia’s home in Roanoke, VA.

He was born in Dunkirk, NY on Nov. 17, 1925 to the late Edward C. Sheedy and Susan (Barnes) Sheedy. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Ellis Sheedy and a daughter, Mary Lynch.

Tom was a World War II veteran serving with the U. S. Army. He lived most of his life in Hornell where he was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church and served as a city alderman for the Third Ward for 20 years. He retired from the New York State Electric and Gas Company (NYSEG) and in 2005, Tom moved to Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, VA where he lived until his death.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joanne Llewellyn Sheedy; children, Kathleen Sheedy VandenBergh (Barry), Susan Sheedy Waligora (Mark), Thomas Sheedy (Michelle), Patricia Sheedy (Robert Atkinson), John Sheedy (Michelle); son-in-law, Greg Lynch; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; sister, Ruth Valentine; many nieces and nephews; as well as his dog, Gypsy.

There will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to join his family at St. Ann’s Church, 31 Erie Ave., Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday (Nov. 7, 2022). Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the World War II Museum, 945 Magazine St., New Orleans, LA 70130. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the church.

Dorothy A. “Dotty” Argay, of Canisteo

CANISTEO / HORNELL-Dorothy A. “Dotty” Argay, 80, of 14 Elm St., Canisteo, NY died Thursday evening (October 13, 2022) at St. James Hospital, following an extended illness.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all.
 
Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 4, 1942, she was the daughter of Frank & Mildred (Murphy) Fogarty. 

Dotty’s early years were spent in Brooklyn, NY and her grade-school years in Levittown, NY.  She lived in Lake Ronkonma, NY during her teen-age years and was a graduate of Sachem High School in Lake Ronkonma.  While living in Lake Ronkonma, she was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church. 

She resided in Hornell for about three years before moving to Canisteo nearly 50 years ago.  She treasured living in Canisteo and considered it her “Little Piece of Paradise”.  For over 30 years, Dotty owned & operated Dot’s Day Care in Canisteo.  She genuinely adored children and influenced the lives of countless children and parents.  She also influenced the lives of young girls while serving as a Girl Scout Leader. 

Dotty was a communicant of St. Joachim’s Church of Canisteo where she taught Religious Education and served on the parish council.  She was also a member of the St. Joachim Church Altar & Rosary Society and a member of the “cleaning crew”. 
 
She had been a member of the Canisteo American Legion Auxiliary for 30 plus years where she served as an officer. She was an avid reader and loved working in her flower garden.  She also enjoyed spending Friday evenings playing “Michigan Rummy” with her Friday Night Ladies Card Club. 

Among all things, Dotty cherished the time that she spent with her husband & children camping, as well as spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren which brought her great joy & happiness.

 She was married on December 9, 1972 to William S. “Bill” Argay who died May 22, 2018.   She was also preceded in death by her sister, Denise Fogarty; brother-in-law, Wayne Powers and her beloved canine companion, “Shotz”.

Surviving are her five children: Dianne (John) Heckel of Canisteo, Maureen Cone of Daytona Beach, FL, Sharon (Paul) Pacholski of Ocala, FL, Christopher (Rosanna) Argay of Canisteo and Jennifer (Rob) Larkin of Garnerville, NY; 12 grandchildren, Willie Rideout and girlfriend Nicole Foster, Kristen (Ed) LaFleur, Jonathon (Melanie) Crider, Samantha (Pete) Lehman, Jeremy Crider, Michael Heckel and girlfriend Brittany Guie, T.J. (Cianna) Rideout, Lizzy Loop, Caden Argay, Brianna Larkin, Robert Larkin, & Alyvia Argay; 10 great-grandchildren, Eddie LaFleur, Evan Rideout , Carter Lehman, Kendall LaFleur, Jayke Crider , Jocelyn Rideout , Lucas Lehman, Morgan Lehman, Grayson Rideout, and Xavier Rideout; 3 sisters, Ellen Powers of Hornell, Maureen (Ron) Palmer of Canisteo and Fran (Dana) Lemme of Mt. Dora FL; 1 brother, Frank (Cindy) Fogarty of Sorrento, FL; several nieces & nephews.

The family of Dorothy A. “Dotty” Argay will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 2:00 PM with Rev. Norma Roberts officiating. Final interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo, NY. Family & friends are also invited to attend a “Celebration of Life” to be held at the Canisteo Fire Hall (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM) following the graveside service.

Richard D. “Dick” Sirianni, Sr., of Hornell

HORNELL-Richard D. “Dick” Sirianni, Sr., 96, of Adsit Street, passed away Thursday evening (Oct. 13, 2022) at the Vincent House in Wayland

Born in Hornell on Feb. 26, 1926 he was a son of the late Anthony and Rose Sirianni. On Oct. 22, 1949 he was married at St. Joseph’s Church in Wayland to Thelma R. Wolfanger, who predeceased him on March 22, 2017 after 67 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his daughter, Gloria Koskie; one sister, Cleora Carroll; three brothers, Frank, Raymond and William Sirianni; and a former son-in-law, Chuck McCollumn.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Dick was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School. He proudly served his country for two years with the U.S. Army during World War II with the 8th Infantry Division. He served in France as an Infantryman and later as a clerk at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the WW II Victory Medal, the European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

For 22 years he was employed by the former Durkee Bread Company in Hornell and retired as a crew chief from the Hornell DPW after 20 years of employment.

Dick was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. He was also a member of the Hornell Council No. 243, Knights of Columbus, the Carducci Lodge, the Hornell Moose Lodge No. 210 and a life member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell.

An avid bowler, he loved spending several weeks in the summer at Keuka Lake, going on drives for ice cream cones, eating out with his wife, Thelma and visiting with friends. Dick especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and loved visits with his great-grandchildren. Dick was very devoted to his family and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

He is lovingly survived by three daughters, Carol Sirianni, Rosemarie McCollumn (Tim LaChiusa) and Mary Ann (John) VanScoter all of Hornell; three sons, Rick Sirianni and James (Samantha) Sirianni all of Hornell and Don Sirianni of Belfast, N.Y.; a son-in-law, William Koskie of Hornell; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Vincent House in Wayland for the wonderful care they gave to Dick.

John V. Prete, 93, of Hornell

HORNELL-John V. Prete, 93, of 1705 County Route 109 (Turnpike Road) passed away unexpectedly late Friday afternoon (Sept. 30, 2022) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Born in Hornell on May 29, 1929, he was a son of the late Rosario and Philomena (Scaglione) Prete. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by one brother, Joseph M. Prete; his sister-in-law, Patricia B. Prete and niece, Laura A. Prete.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, John was a graduate of Hornell High School class of 1947. During his high school years, he was employed part-time by the former Erie Railroad, Things Shoe Store and Jacob Bros. Shoe Store in Hornell. After attending St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY he was employed by Westinghouse in Bath before attending the University of Illinois.

John proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to his honorable discharge in 1954. While in the military he majored in Surgical Technology at Brooke Medical School at Fort Sam Houston, TX. and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

In 1956 he began his 39 year career with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) in Hornell and retired in 1995 as a Senior Right of Way Agent in the Real Estate Division.

John was an active member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a devout communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell, where he also served as an usher. Throughout the years he served as a principal and instructor for the CCD Religious Education Program and attended the Perpetual Adoration Chapel.

An avid golfer, he was a member of Twin Hickory Golf Course in Hornell and was a life member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell, a Fourth Degree member of Hornell Council No. 243, Knights of Columbus and a member of the Carducci Lodge Sons of Italy in Hornell.

John was an airplane enthusiast and trained to become a pilot; he was also a die-hard fan of the Buffalo Bills and the NY Mets. He will be remembered most of all for the love of his family, his family was his whole life and he especially enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s activities.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia (Stisser) Prete who he married at Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, NY on July 4, 1959; six children, Jean Prete of Hornell, Christine (Dave) Prete-Freeland of Vestal, NY, Karen (Jim) Carney of Hornell, Jon Prete (Andrew McSherry) of Edinburgh, Scotland, Deborah (Kevin) Smith of Hornell and David (Jodi) Prete of Canisteo, NY; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Francis (Cecilia) Prete of San Francisco, CA and George Prete of Arkport, NY; two brothers-in-law, Gerry Stisser of Wellsville, NY and Lee (Christine) Stisser of Florida; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Rose Anna McCormick, of Hornell

HORNELL-Rose Anna McCormick, 71, of Hornell, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

On December 29, 1970, Rose was married to Deacon Bob McCormick who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters, Tara (Robert) Pienkowski of Syracuse, Erin (Terrence) Sloan of Selkirk, NY and Nicole (Matthew) Einhorn of Selkirk, NY; 7 grandchildren, Mia Pienkowski, Carissa Pienkowski, Aiden Sloan, Bryson Sloan, Kaleb Sloan, Cameron Einhorn and Avery Einhorn.

At Rose’s request there will be no prior calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church, Hornell, NY. A reception will follow at The Main Place, 215 Main St., Hornell, NY.

Joseph N. Argentieri, formerly of Hornell and Buffalo

BUFFALO/HORNELL-Joseph N. Argentieri, 85, formerly of Buffalo and Hornell, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2022, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Born in Hornell on March 1, 1937, he was a son of the late Nicholas and Emma (Severo) Argentieri. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by one brother, Richard Argentieri of Hornell.

He attended Hornell High School and was a proud Navy veteran and a member of the National Guard.

Joseph owned and operated the Italian Villa in Lancaster, NY and was a food warehouse supervisor at Flickingers/Scrivner Foods for many years.

He was the beloved husband of Pamela (Corrie) Argentieri; the dearest father of Joseph and Michael Argentieri; the loving grandfather of Nicole, Nick, Angelo and Vincent; great-grandfather of Vivian; brother of Mary Theresa Walsh and Diane Argentieri; also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Calling hours and services were held in Buffalo.

Carolyn B. Lunn, of Hornell

HORNELL-Carolyn B. Lunn, 95, of 1190 County Route 66 (The Woodlands), formerly of 7586 Airport Rd., Hornell, died early Friday morning (September 9, 2022) at her home, following a brief illness.

A native and life resident of Hornell, she was born October 22, 1926, and was the daughter of Arthur & Mildred (Collins) Brunskill.

Carolyn was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1945). Following graduation, she was employed as a sales lady at the former Tuttle & Rockwell Store and later as an operator for New York Telephone. For several years, Carolyn worked as a Kitchen Aid at the former Bethesda Community Hospital and later as a cook at the former Blue Angel Restaurant.

For a time, she worked at the former Mercycare Nursing Facility and at St. James Mercy Hospital, retiring in 1989. Following her “retirement”, Carolyn served as a home care health provider in the Hornell area.

Carolyn was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Hornell. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and making porcelain dolls.

She was married on November 13, 1954 to Truman Lunn who died in 2006. She was also preceded in death by her son, Thomas Shroyer, who died in 1989; her daughter, Rebecca Sue Williams, who died in 2019; 2 brothers, Bill Brunskill and Mason Brunskill; 3 sisters, Catherine Brill, Ella Mae Wilkins and Mary Howe.

Surviving are her daughter, Cindy (Donald) Wells of Ogdensburg, NY; 3 sons, Wesley Lunn of Canaseraga, Steven (Paula) Lunn of Conesus, NY and Michael (Nicole) Lunn of Modesto, CA; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

At Carolyn’s request there will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be in Heritage Hill Cemetery in Arkport at the convenience of the family.

Friends are invited to attend a “Celebration of Life” to be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at the Fremont Fire Hall beginning at 12:00 Noon.

Priscilla Eleachea (Haley) Buono, of Hornell

HORNELL-Priscilla Eleachea (Haley) Buono, 80, of Hornell, passed away on Friday (Aug. 19, 2022) after a long illness at Elderwood Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. She was born on May 20, 1942 in Hornell to Robert G. and Margaret M. (Tucker) Haley.

Eleachea graduated from Hornell High School, Class of 1960. After high school, she worked at Woolworth’s and had various other jobs. Eleachea retired in 2012 from St. James Mercy Hospital where she worked as an E.R. secretary.

Eleachea enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends and was the life of the party. She loved having a house full of nieces and nephews in the summers. Eleachea also loved throwing parties, from St. Patrick’s Day to Family Reunions. Her cooking and baking will be missed by many family and friends. If there was music playing, Eleachea was dancing.

Eleachea enjoyed all different types of crafts, including sewing, painting and other needlework. She took great pride in her flower gardens. Eleachea was an active member of the Ladies of Columbus, Turning Point Food Pantry and T.O.P.S. She also enjoyed doing water aerobics at the YMCA.

In addition to her parents, Eleachea is predeceased by her brothers, Robert and his wife, Sybil, Thomas, and his wife Ruth, Lawrence, and Joseph Haley. Also, by her brothers-in-law, John Leo Clancy and Rolland Thompson.

Surviving are her children, Christopher (Bridgit) Buono, Haley Leonard, and Margaret Buono of Hornell and Joseph (Mary) Buono of Canandaigua, NY. Eleachea has six grandchildren including Shawn (Renee) Buono, Jaden Buono, Sara Leonard, Meaghan Leonard, Aubrey Buono and Rowan Buono. She is also survived by sisters, Margaret Clancy and Patricia Thompson and brothers, Timothy (Sharon) Haley and Eugene (Karen) Haley, all of Hornell; sister-in-law, Sandra Haley; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Patricia Kay “Pat” LaPiana, formerly of North Hornell

NORTH HORNELL-Patricia Kay “Pat” LaPiana, formerly of Seneca Road, North Hornell, was born in Hornell January 25, 1944 and passed away on Friday, August 19, 2022.

She graduated from Hornell High School in 1962 and Geneseo State College in 1966 with a degree in Education. Pat received a Master of Education degree as well. Her passion was teaching, and she spent 34 years with the Canisteo School District, educating and enjoying “her kids” in the 1 st and 3 rd grades. Pat, the educator, was respected and endeared by
her students and colleagues.

Pat was a voracious reader and a fan of the theater and most other forms of entertainment. She loved to travel and was ready to take a drive or board a plane on a moment’s notice. “My bag is always packed” was her motto. “She loved life and life loved her right back…”

Pat was also an active, lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St Ann’s Church in Hornell.

She was predeceased by her parents, Vincent and Clare LaPiana and her sister, Joyce. She is survived by her sisters, Margaret Volpe and Constance (Bill) Rempe as well as five nephews, a niece, five great nephews and four great nieces.

There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. Saturday (August 27, 2022) at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Hornell. All are welcome to attend.

The service will be live streamed and may be seen on the Facebook page of Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home for 30 days beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 27, 2022).

In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat’s name may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, Rochester and Finger Lakes Region Chapter, 2000 Meridian Centre Blvd., Suite 110, Rochester, NY 14618.

Gerald H. “Jerry” Powers, of Almond

ALMOND-Gerald H. “Jerry” Powers, 87, of 18 Mill St., Almond, NY died Saturday afternoon (August 13, 2022) at Hornell Gardens, following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on September 19, 1934, he was the son of Albert & Cecile (Robertson) Powers.

Jerry grew up in Hornell and was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1954). He was a veteran of the US Army, serving his country from 1957 – 1959. He was employed in many capacities at Ingersoll Rand Corporation in Painted Post, retiring in 1998 as a parts inspector. He has resided in Almond since 1998.

On August 24, 1957, Jerry married the former Carolyn Bird who survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Dale (Carrie) Powers, Jeff Powers and Jamie (Trish) Powers; 1 brother, Gary (Sue) Powers; 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren.

The family of Gerald H. “Jerry” Powers will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Memorial Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 5:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

In recognition of Jerry’s service to his country as a member of the US Army, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.

Patricia A. “Pat” Dailey, of Hornell

HORNELL-Patricia A. “Pat” Dailey, 88, of Hornell, died Tuesday evening (August 2, 2022) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, following a recent illness.

Born in Chicago, IL on December 17, 1933, she was the daughter of Bryan & Sarah (Bunn) Moylan.

Pat resided in Elmira, NY from 1934 – 1962 and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Grade School and later graduated from Elmira Catholic High School. She resided in Hornell from 1962 – 1983 where she was employed as Unit Secretary at the former St. James Mercy Hospital. Pat lived in Rochester from 1983 – 1990 where she worked at Strong Memorial Hospital. She returned to Hornell in 1990, resuming her employment at St. James Mercy Hospital. Pat thoroughly enjoyed her monthly dinners with friends and former co-workers of St. James Mercy Hospital.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann’s Church. Pat enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting and music. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On September 20, 1952, Pat married her high school sweetheart, Thomas “Paul” Dailey, who died February 8, 2008. She was also preceded in death by 3 sons, Daniel Dailey who died in 2003, David Dailey who died in 2010 and Dennis Dailey who died in 2012; her brothers, Bryan “Bud” Moylan and John “Jack” Moylan.

Surviving are 2 sons, Tim Dailey of Holley, NY, and Jeff Dailey of Hornell; 5 daughters, Linda (Karl) Haynes of Wilmington, DE, Teresa (Joe) Hall of Hornell, Carol (Steve) Freeland of Hornell, Patricia (Bradley) Spicer of Hornell and Diana (Dirk) Huussen of Rochester; her daughters-in-law, Sue (Glenn) Winans and Patricia Dailey, Anne Marie Dailey and Suzie Dailey; her sisters-in-law, Barbara Dailey and Gloria Moylan; 30 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; nieces & nephews.

At Pat’s request there will be no prior calling hours. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church with final interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Pat’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name be made to the Hornell Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843.
