July 14, 2021

The Hornell Dodgers rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Genesee Rapids on Tuesday evening. The Dodgers improved to 18-9-1 on the season.

After a weather delay of over an hour, Genesee took a 3-0 lead with a run in the 1st and two more in the 2nd. They threatened for more but stranded the bases loaded in both innings. They looked to add more in the 4th when they loaded the bases again with no outs but the combination of Charlie White (Bensalem/Wilmington) and Dom Grady (Wilmington) worked out of the jam.

In the bottom of the 4th, Jordyn Smith (Grambling) drew a two-out walk and scored when Brody Burdett’s (Alfred State) long fly ball to center field was dropped. Smith scored all the way from first to make it 3-1.

In the 5th, Matt Staker (Webster) collected the Dodgers first hit with a single with one out. He scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. Mitch Daniels (Webster) who walked scored to tie it after Aaron Mann (Drury) lifted a long fly ball (sac fly) that was misplayed. Mann and Smith came around to score with two outs when Burdett was able to hit a single into left to give the Dodgers their first lead.

In the 7th, Dansville tried to mount a rally. After the first two batters reached on singles, Matteo Avallone (Alfred State) moved to the mound and struck out the next two batters. After a walk to load the bases, Avallone struck out his third batter to end the game.

Hornell was held to just two hits, singles by Staker and Burdett. They did draw six walks and took advantage of five Rapid errors.

Grady earned the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed four hits while striking out four. Avallone got his first save by striking out three in the 7th.
