June 20, 2021

The Hornell Dodgers won their second straight and fifth out of seven with a 8-3 victory over Cortland on Saturday afternoon. Game two of the doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the 1st with the Dodgers holding a 1-0 advantage.

The game was scoreless until the 3rd when the Dodgers got the bats going. Ryan Hill (Monroe CC/Mercyhurst) drew a leadoff walk, Mitch Daniels (Webster) followed with a ground rule double to center, and Wade Kelly (Coastal Carolina) got the team on the board with a RBI single. Daniels came in to score on a wild pitch and Jack McDonald hit a sac fly to make it 3-0.

In the 4th, Levi Hall (Webster) led off with a single and went to second two batters later after a single by Daniels. Kelly delivered a RBI double to left to score Hall and McDonald hit his second sac fly to make it 5-0.

Hall made it 8-0 in the 5th when he sent a three-run homer over the right-center fence. His three run shot scored AJ Gonzalez (St. Thomas Aquinas) who had reached on an error and Brody Burdett (Alfred State) who had collected a single.

Charlie White (Boiling Springs/Wilmington) threw four shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four. Hall allowed a pair of runs in the 5th, Noah Fasso (Hudson Valley CC) allowed one run in the 6th, and Daniels kept the Crush scoreless in the 7th to finish the victory.

Daniels was 2 for 3, Hall was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, Kelly was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, and Burdett was 2 for 4. McDonald drove in two with his pair of sac flies.

Christopher Penna (Rhodes) hit a RBI single in the top of the 1st inning of the nightcap before a thunderstorm hit the area. The game will be resumed at a date to be announced.

Then on Sunday, the Hornell Dodgers used a five run 1st inning to propel themselves to a 8-1 victory over the Syracuse Spartans on Sunday afternoon. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended with the Spartans leading 1-0 in the top of the 1st with one out.

After Alex Foppe (Webster) kept the Spartans off the board in the 1st, the Dodgers got the offense going quickly. Wade Kelly (Coastal Carolina) and Mitch Daniels (Webster) collected singles before Jordyn Smith (Grambling) reached on a fielding error that scored Kelly and another error scored Daniels. Christopher Penna (Rhodes) was hit by a pitch and Matteo Avallone (Alfred State) made it 5-0 when he hit a homer over the right field fence.

In the 3rd, Penna led off the inning with a solo homer to right. Later in the inning, AJ Gonzalez (St. Thomas Aquanis) connected on a RBI single and Ryan Hill (Monroe CC/Mercyhurst) hit a RBI double off the left field fence to make it 8-0.

The Spartans got their only run of the game off of Foppe in the 4th on a RBI single by Patrick May but the Dodgers gunned out a runner at the plate (Wade Kelly to Penna) to prevent any more damage.

Avallone led the Dodger offense with a 3 for 3, 3 RBI day. He collected a single, a double, and a homer. Kelly and Daniels were each 2 for 4 on the day.

Foppe went the distance allowing one run on six hits. He walked two and struck out six.

Game two started but light rain turned to a downpour and forced the suspension of the game.

Hornell, winners of three straight and six of their last seven, continues their busy stretch on Monday when they travel to Dansville for the first time in the season for a 5 p.m. contest vs. the Gliders.
