City of Hornell Awarded $300,000 Restore NY Grant to Support Redevelopment of Historic Landman Building

The City of Hornell is excited to announce receiving a Restore New York award for $300,000. The award is provided for the redevelopment of the Landman Building which is located at 83-93 Main Street.

The Landman Building is one of the foundational projects of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI), having been awarded $1.5 million in DRI grant funds. This project is among the largest DRI awards made to a private development, with initial project costs estimated at $3 million. However, the redevelopment faced significant delays due to the pandemic, compounded by inflation that drastically increased project expenses. The additional Restore New York funding will help bridge the remaining financial gap, allowing construction and redevelopment efforts to move forward.

Mayor John Buckley highlighted the vision for the site, stating, “The project will include the construction of a third story while maintaining the historic charm of the building, and will bring a thoughtful mix of apartment units, retail shops, art studios, and a rooftop terrace to the heart of our downtown. This revitalization effort will draw more residents and businesses to Main Street, injecting new energy and economic opportunity into the community.”

City Planner Heather Reynolds shared her perspective on the funding’s significance and the project impact, stating, “I appreciate Empire State Development’s acknowledgment of the rising construction costs since the COVID-19 pandemic. The addition of Restore NY funding will offset some of the inflation that has occurred since the developer’s initial cost estimates. I would like to thank Iron Shore Properties for continuing to invest in our city, and I look forward to seeing such an iconic Hornell building receive the renovation it deserves.”

Mayor Buckley expressed the importance of the ongoing support, “We’re grateful for the continued partnership and support from Empire State Development, especially Omar Sanders, whose efforts have been instrumental in making this progress possible. This funding is another step forward in building a stronger and more dynamic downtown Hornell.”
