Mayoral Candidate Rich Argentieri’s Response To Mayor Buckley’s Statement

April 1, 2021

From Hornell Democrat Mayoral Candidate, Rich Argentieri:

I appreciate that the current administration responded to my announcement regarding my intention to run for Mayor. Additionally, I would like to thank him for the campaign gift when he proved the points I was making during my announcement.

Mr. Buckley immediately chose to become political—Hornell needs less of this—not more. I do not want to get into a war of words the facts speak for themselves.

The previous administration handed Mr. Buckley $2 plus million in fund balance. This was a very strong financial situation created by the former administration; Mr. Buckley even touted this fact during his campaign for Mayor. Now, Mr. Buckley flip-flops and states that he was handed a financial disaster. What a slap in the face to our former Mayor.

Mr. Buckley’s administration raised taxes somewhere in the neighborhood of 9% in his first 3 years in office.

As I said during my announcement for Mayor of Hornell, I’m not a politician. In good faith I supported the administration in the first few years.

Now, after learning the process, I know there is a better way to move forward. In the future, I will not support tax increases with such a healthy fund balance. I will not support future cash grabs of re-evaluations especially coupled with tax increases. In the future, I intend to support the best services for our community, without over taxation.

Now that I set the record straight, we have plenty of time to have this conversation directly with the voters over the course of this year.
