STATEMENT FROM DEMOCRAT ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE BARBARA BAER:
The race for the 133rd assembly begins today. I look forward to announcing my candidacy in the next few days. as a person of character, competency, and compassion, i offer a commonsense choice to the voters of the 133rd.
As a member of the majority, i will be a powerful voice for change for the people my district. We have been neglected for a long time.
This year, the issues of healthcare, jobs, climate change, and farmer distress are on voters’ minds. People are looking for a powerful voice for change, not a naysayer.
From Pittsford to Hornell, folks wake up at night worrying about the same things, health, work, their farms, the future of their children.

HORNELL, NY – Hornell Police Chief Ted Murray informed the Board of Public Safety that the city’s Police Dept. has recently received their new service weapons and training at the firing range will begin immediately.
The department is changing over from the Smith & Wesson brand of guns to Glocks. Murray said for the local residents of the firing range to not be surprised if they hear multiple gunfire in the coming weeks.
In addition to the new weapons, the HPD also received a new patrol vehicle. A brand new all-wheel drive Dodge Charger will soon be taking the streets of Hornell.
In other news Fire Chief Dan Smith announced that the HFD will start participating in the Steuben County EMS Mutual Aid Plan. According to Smith, Hornell decided to participate in the program to help insure better response times in emergency situations.
With this plan, if an emergency medical service is needed and the first contacted agency cannot respond in a timely fashion, the call will be relayed to the next closest department.
This program is designed to allocate resources and provide patients with efficient and time sensitive services. The proper medical care for the sick and injured is the primary scope of this plan.

HORNELL, NY – The Board of Public Safety recognized 4 people after a major accident occurred on August 29th at 223 Grand Street at around 7:30pm. According to Police Officer Stuart McHenry, a motor vehicle accident resulted a vehicle going off the road, striking a house severing a major gas line.
First on the scene was officer McHenry, who immediately noticed the intense smell of natural gas. Nearby resident Terry Walton, thanks to quick thinking, informed homeowner George Robertshaw, who in turn immediately located the valve to shut the gas off. Walton then called 911 and kept on constant contact with them providing updates.
The suspected vehicle attempted to leave the scene after the accident, where a 3rd resident, Edward Landries, swung into action. He followed the vehicle and got the license plate number and briefly confronted the suspect who he recognized and then decided to back off at that point.
“All three of these men reacted with an appropriate response to the incident and thankfully avoided a potentially life threatening situation to the entire neighborhood,” said McHenry, “and because of their involvement an arrest was immediately made. This is a great example of how we want our citizens to react in situations like this.”
