Longtime Wlea Host Beth Moore Has Died

May 6, 2022

With sadness, the family of Beth Mack Moore announces her passing on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at Taylor Health Center in Bath, NY.

A trailblazer as a working mother and female broadcaster in the 1960’s, Beth embarked on a decades-long career in local radio, beginning as a secretary at WWHG Radio in Hornell and WFSR Radio in Bath. She took time away to raise her children, then, seeking a way to help the Hornell community during the flood of 1972, she volunteered her services at WLEA radio, tracking and verifying rosters at area evacuation sites as well as updating injury and casualty developments 24/7 through this crisis. She was asked to stay on at WLEA and for the next 22 years, enjoyed a remarkable career as a local news reporter, and as an account clerk serving the Hornell, Bath and Wellsville areas. Beginning in the late 1970s’s she found her true stride as the host of the hugely popular 9 AM “The Beth Moore Show.”

The full obituary can be find on our Obituary page.

From Brian O’Neil, Wlea Radio: The staff has the fondest memories of the late Beth Moore.
Below is the audio of some of Beth’s work here at Wlea. R.I.P. Beth. Thank you.

NYC Teen Reportedly Drives 120 MPH Through Livingston County Towns

May 6, 2022

Livingston County Sheriff Tom Dougherty reports the arrest of an 18 year old male from the Bronx, who is accused of trying to get away from police in Mount Morris and allegedly drove 120 miles an hour to do so. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Department reports that they caught up with the 18 year old Bronx male, Redi Muca, later on, in the Town of Leicester. Sheriff Dougherty pointed out that not only was bail reform a problem, in that the accusations of going 120 miles an hour were not enough to hold Muca, on bail.

Sheriff Dougherty also stated that the Livingston County District Attorney did not show up or send any one in to represent the prosecution in this case. Sheriff Tom Dougherty has said numerous times, that the D.A. pulls no shows in court.

We reached out to Livingston County DA Gregory McCaffrey for his response yesterday, but we have not heard back from him as of yet. As soon as we do, we will post McCaffrey’s response.

Update On The Legislative Maps Courtroom Cases

May 5, 2022

A lawsuit was filed in a federal court to stop the primary from happening in August. That was on Wednesday, and a federal judge threw it out. According to State Senator Tom O’Mara, there was a part of the lawsuit that called for grouping all the congressional seats together, instead of having district lines. O’Mara maintains, that would have, had the judge not thrown the case out, given a lot more power to New York City Dems. “The Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee,” O’Mara said, “were trying to get a federal court to say ‘no, you can’t move that primary to August. They also wanted the federal judge to follow some law from the 1950’s out there that says because the state doesn’t have their congressional maps ready in time for the November election, they should run all the congressional seats at once, together at large. That’s so that everyone would be running as candidates together (so it would be one party against another party, not one candidate against another candidate). It’s been nothing short of arrogant and obnoxious.”

As a result of that lawsuit being tossed out of a federal court on Wednesday, it’s likely that Steuben County Judge Pat McAllister will be able to decide, when the primary date will be.

Buckley: Lets Have The Primary Date In September

May 5, 2022

HORNELL, NY – Mayor John Buckley is urging Governor Kathy Hochul to consolidate two statewide primaries dates into one day in September. With the NYS congressional and senate lines being redrawn in the coming weeks, it has created a scenario where there could be two separate primary dates this year.

“The hyper-partisan gerrymandered district lines which were fast-tracked by the Governor and thrown out by the courts may ultimately be another financial blow to tax payers as municipalities such as Hornell will have to absorb added costs related to the extra day of elections.”

Canisteo-Greenwood Is Having A Consistent Increase In Covid Cases

May 4, 2022

From Canisteo-Greenwood Superintendent Tom Crook:

We wanted to let our families know that we are beginning to see a consistent rise of covid cases here at school. We want to stress the importance of keeping your child home if they are displaying any symptoms, even if you think it is allergies. We have plenty of home tests available if you would like to test your child if they are displaying symptoms, or our nurses can test. After many years of dealing with covid, we know the strategies used to curb exposure and transmission: masks, distancing, isolation, testing, vaccinations, etc. Please choose which strategy is best for your child as we deal with this recent surge in cases.

Hornell’s School Budget Vote Is Coming Up This Month

May 4, 2022

By Jasmine Willis

HORNELL — The Hornell City School held a public hearing to discuss the $40 million school budget on Tuesday.

The budget can be viewed in great detail on the school’s website. The school election is May 17 to approve the school budget and elect a trustee for a five-year term. Kelly Davis is seeking reelection for her third term. Scott Carroll is also campaigning for the spot.

“We have been very proud the last several years in maintaining a stable budget,” Jeremy Palotti, Hornell City District superintendent said. “We are very proud of our growing graduation rate over the years.”

Patrick Flaitz and Palotti went over the proposed budget one last time for the public hearing. It can be viewed by going to the about us section on the school website. There you will find several lengthy documents going into detail about the school budget. You will also be able to gage a report based on what you want to know.

Flaitz mentioned that the uptake in assessments doesn’t go to the school. People who have been upset by these tax hikes need to understand it isn’t about the school budget.

The school board voted and accepted revenue reports, budget transfer reports, federal budget transfer, special education programs, and student activities.

Palotti said everything about the school budget is about providing the best education for the students.

The school board voted on and approved a lengthy resolution for the new capital fund project that secures $1.3 million in aid for the building projects. The school board earmarks these funds to be transferred to the capital fund for the 2022-23 fiscal year. These funds are used to fix the elevator, provide security to the main offices, and continue all other construction on the building.

Although Covid-19 took a toll on all school districts with student enrollment the school board is confident that things will prevail in the future. Palotti said he wants the best programs offered at the school for future students. Davis said she is proud to be part of the board of education and wants to continue her place as a trustee for another term. She is excited about all the plans for the future and wants to continue to be part of it.

In the upcoming school election voters will vote on one trustee, bus lease, renew the transportation reserve, and creating a new capital project fund. Voting is noon to 9 p.m. in the school lobby on May 17.

The following have been approved for tenure with glowing recommendations; Todd Bialecki, Carli Cavanaugh, Tristen Christie, Jeremy Donlon, Kristen Gostomski, Jordan Hahn, Keelia Hamdan, Stacey Llli, Michelle Lovell, Chelsea Miller, Tammie Mullen, Amanda Owens, Ashleigh Striker, Rebekah VanNorman, and Kasi Washburn.
