ARKPORT-Alexander N. “Alex” Marcello, 89, of State Route 961F, passed away early Sunday morning (Nov. 27, 2016) at the V.A. Medical Center in Bath, after a short illness.
Born in Batavia on Dec. 27, 1926, he was a son of the late Gennaro and Frances (Moritti) Marcello. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased in 1971 by his first wife, the former Rose Valino; his second wife in 2012, the former Florence Reynolds, who he married in Canaseraga in 1980 and in 2008 by his brother, Frank Marcello of Greenville, Tenn.
Alex proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945 to his honorable discharge in 1946 as a Private First Class (PFC) serving overseas in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations and later served with Company A 785th Military Police Battalion in Okinawa and Ryukyus. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal.
In 1942 he began his career with the Erie Railroad in Batavia and eventually retired as a Supervisor with Conrail in Hornell.
He resided in Canaseraga before becoming a resident of Arkport and was a member of the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post No. 1248, the Cpl. J.J. Mooney VFW Post No. 2250 in Hornell and the Hornell Association.
Alex was an avid bowler, golfer and fisherman and in his later years he enjoyed spending time at the Casino in Batavia.
His loving family includes his five step children, Karol Lockwood of Chicago, Ill., Alan Reynolds (Kathy Chiarilli) of Hornell, Scott (Laura) Reynolds of Dallas, Tex., Debbie (Tony) Sciotti and Kelly (Kathy) Reynolds all of Hornell; his sister, Elizabeth “Liz” Kinne of Batavia; his brother, Joseph (Frances) Marcello also of Batavia; and his step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Alexander N. “Alex” Marcello.
To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours. A private graveside service, with military honors, will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Batavia at the convenience of his family.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to their favorite charity.
