Friendlys Restaurant In Hornell Has Closed

January 26, 2015

HORNELL, NY – Mayor Shawn Hogan tells WLEA News that Friendly’s Restaurant in Hornell closed on Sunday night.

The mayor says that the reason he was told for the restaurant shutting their doors, is that the landlord raised the rent, and because Friendly’s was going through financial problems at the national level, that the corporation decided to close the Hornell restaurant.

Hogan says he’s confident that it won’t be an empty building for very long, and that Hornell will get another restaurant in that area. “We’ll work to fill the slot, just as we worked to fill the theater, we’ll work to fill this,” Hogan told WLEA News. “When one door closes, another one opens.”

Livingston County Sheriff’s Office: “Jane Doe” Identified

Click here to see video of Sheriff Doughtery.

Click here to see video of former Sheriff John York.

January 26, 2015

GENESEO, NY – Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports a major breakthrough in the 1979 unidentified homicide case, often referred to as the Caledonia Jane Doe case. Livingston County Sheriff’s Investigators have been working closely with the Hernando County Florida Sheriff’s Office on a recent lead, which has led to the identification of the victim. Her name is Tammy Jo Alexander. Tammy Jo was born on November 2, 1963 to Barbara Barnes and Marvin Alexander in Atlanta Georgia.

Officials say that Tammy Jo last lived in Brooksville Florida and attended school at Hernando High School and South Sumter High School, both in Florida. We are asking anyone who knew or has information about Tammy Jo Alexander, please call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office responded on November 10, 1979 to a report of a young girl found murdered on the side of Route 20 in the Town of Caledonia. Since that day, the Sheriff’s Office has followed up on thousands upon thousands of leads across the world and persistently worked to identify her as new technology developed.

Sheriff Dougherty says an old friend of Tammy Jo Alexander saw her face on a social media website.   “A classmate that came forward and made the report down in Florida,” Dougherty said.   Former Livingston County Sheriff John York was disgusted because the family of Tammy Jo Alexander did not file a missing persons report.  “This case could have been solved long ago, had she had a parent, had she had a family that cared enough that wanted to make a missing persons report,” York told reporters at the Monday press conference.

Anyone with any information about Tammy Jo Alexander, or the “Caledonia Jane Doe” case, please call the centralized hotline at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Assemblyman Phil Palmesano and Senator Young Want Silver To Resign

January 21, 2015

New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (R) was arrested on corruption charges this morning.  In a press conference held in the 1pm hour in New York City, U.S. Attorney Preet Bahara said Silver is alleged to have taken millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks.

Bahara wants to reopen the Moreland Commission files.  Albany reporter Liz Benjamin from Time Warner Cable News says that the Republicans in the Assembly want Silver out, but that the Assembly Democrats want Silver to stay on in his job.

Assembly Republican leader Brian Kolb of Canandaigua and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R, Corning) want Silver out and want him out now.  Palmesano told WLEA News that he cannot understand why the Assembly Democrats want Silver to stay on in spite of the five federal charges.   “I find that troubling just because I do believe it is going to be a distraction, it is going to be a cloud that is over the head of the legislative session and the budget negotiations in particular.”

Assemblyman Joe Giglio told WLEA News that Silver used the government as his “own personal piggy bank”, and Giglio wonders why the state government let this go on so long that the federal government had to step in.  “It’s amazing to me that conduct of that nature can go on so long undetected,” Giglio said in a phone interview with WLEA this afternoon.

Senator Cathy Young (R, Livingston/Allegany Counties issued the following statement:

“Sheldon Silver should resign his position immediately. His arrest has put him in a compromised position and it makes it incredibly difficult to negotiate the state budget or get meaningful legislation passed with this situation hanging over his head.”

For years on his weekday radio show, Assemblyman Bill Nojay has been complaining for years about silver being the most corrupt man in New York State politics.  “Well, you know, I hate to be negative all the time about people,” Nojay told WLEA.  “It did get a little repetitive to say that Sheldon Silver was the most corrupt man in New York politics, but it’s true!”
