Benjamin L. McGregor, Hornell

Hornell, NY – Benjamin L. McGregor, 45, of 86 North Main Street, passed away Monday (January 27, 2014) at his home surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Hornell, February 11, 1968, the son of Mark and Phyllis Eymer McGregor, he had resided in Hornell all his life. Ben had been employed as a laboror at AAC Contracting in Rochester.

Ben was a member of the Hornell Moose Lodge and was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as a NASCAR enthusiast. For the last 10 years, Ben and his wife Pam volunteered at the NYSFOB(New York State Festival of Baloons) in Dansville.

He was predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Chace McGregor of Hornell, 2 daughters, Krystle (Michael) Malm of Hornell and Allexys Townsend of Hornell, 3 sons, Mark McGregor of Hornell, Lucas Towner of Arkport and Joseph Townsend of Hornell, his sisters, Patricia Jackson. Sandra (Bill Grimm) Coogan and Sherry (Terry) Vanduser all of Hornell, the “Apple of his Eye”, his grand daughter Payton Chace of Hornell, his brother-in-law, Michael (Wendy) Chace of Hornell and his Mother-In-Law and Father-in Law, Robert and Mary Gross of Canisteo and Linda and Roy Chace Jr. of Hornell, as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Susan J. “Sue” Johnson, Hornell

Hornell, NY – Susan J. “Sue” Johnson, 58, of Church St. Court, Hornell, died unexpectedly on Monday (January 27, 2014) at her home.

Born in Buffalo, NY on May 28, 1955, she was the daughter of Dr. Richard & Nancy (Knapp) Smith.

Sue grew up in Bath, NY and was a graduate of Bath Haverling High School (class of 1973). She attended Alfred State College and later obtained her Registered Nurse’s License at St. James School of Nursing.

For several years, Sue was employed as a secretary at Shults & Shults Law Office in Hornell. She also was employed for several years as a registered nurse at St. James Mercy Hospital.

Sue had been a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and a member of St. Ann’s Church. More recently, she attended Bible Study at the Community Center of Church Street Court. She loved to knit, crochet, read, arts & crafts, watch movies, talk about life, and cherished spending time with her family and many friends, including, Sissy & Dan Mahoney. Recently, Sue was proud and excited to have become a member of the Hornell YMCA.

Sue was the second oldest of five beautiful sisters, who shared a special bond. Sue knew exactly what love was — how to give love and how to receive love!!! She had a contagious laugh and was known for her wonderful sense of humor. Sue was without a doubt, her children’s biggest fan, taking pride in everything they do. Over the years, Sue loved attending each and every one of her oldest son Kyle’s sporting events. It was always Sue rooting the loudest. She had a genuine love of music and truly loved watching her youngest son, Kurt, perform with his many bands. She could always be found “front & center” dancing, smiling and simply having a great time. Sue was extremely proud of her daughter, Keegan and the wonderful wife & mother that she is. She absolutely adored her 2 beautiful granddaughters, and they adored her just as much. Grandma Sue cherished every minute she spent with them, and they brought each other such joy.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Eichler; her brother-in-law, Alan Eichler; and her nephew, Graham Andrus.

Surviving are her “K-Kids” who she loved “a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck” — daughter, Keegan Eliza (Tim) Manchester of Leominster, MA; sons, Kyle Jeffery (Brittney Tracy) Johnson of Rochester and Kurt Greggery Johnson of Rochester; her former husband & friend, Jeffery (Carla) Johnson of Hornell; 3 sisters, Anne (Warren) Smith Abbey of Bath, Karen (Tom) Andrus of Bath and Kathy (Dan Crossman) Smith of Bath; her grandchildren Anna Susan Manchester and Katherine Lucille Manchester (who she loved & adored); her aunts, Helen Jane Bartron, Sister Mary Jean Smith and Lucille Knapp; father-in-law, William “Wallboard” (Arlene Dennis) Johnson; in-laws, William (Gail) Johnson and Greggery (Liz) Johnson; her beloved nieces & nephews, Vanessa (Dan) Spitulnik, Jaime (Scott) Milanovich, Matthew (Amanda) Johnson, Erica (Joe) Saliceti, Jade Andrus & Brandon Mambelli; along with several cousins, great nieces and nephews.

The family of Susan J. “Sue” Johnson will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where a Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

Susan Harkenrider, Rexville

Rexville, NY – Susan M. “Susie” Harkenrider, 57, of Loomis Rd. passed away unexpectedly at home Thursday January 23, 2014.

Susie was born November 25, 1956 in Hornell to James and Geraldine (O’Dell) Harkenrider. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother Stephen Harkenrider.

She was a graduate of Greenwood Central School and was a lifelong resident and homemaker on the Harkenrider family farm in Rexville.

Survivors include: three brothers: Michael (Lois) Harkenrider of Leola, Pa. Christopher and Patrick Harkenrider of Rexville, one sister: Monica (John) Dean of Andover and a sister-in-law April Harkenrider of Whitesville. She is also survived by one aunt, Veronica “Bonnie” Crosby of Troupsburg, nieces and nephews: Krista and Kathleen Harkenrider, Joshua (Lisa) Harkenrider and Caitlan Dean, as well as many cousins and great nieces and nephews.

There will be no public calling hours, a Mass and Christian burial will take place Monday at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rexville. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Churchyard Cemetery in Rexville.

Memorial contributions in Susie’s name may be made to Our Lady of the Valley, St. Mary’s Churchyard Cemetery Fund, 27 Erie Ave. Hornell, N.Y. 14843.

Hornell / Fremont – Lois J. Hendee, 82, 8063 Route 21, Hornell (Town of Fremont) died early Tuesday morning (January 21, 2014) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Pennsylvania on November 29, 1931, she was the daughter of Albert & Doris Young.

Lois grew up in the Canaseraga – Arkport area and was a graduate of Arkport Central School (class of 1949). She later earned her Associate’s Degree from Alfred State College (class of 1951).

In her younger years, Lois had been employed as a Lab Technician at Dansville Hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and at the former Karl Clinic in Hornell.

She was married on December 31, 1955 to Jack Hendee who survives. Along with her husband, Lois was active in the day-to-day operation of Hendee Homestead Dairy Farm in Fremont. She also enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, cooking & baking for her family & neighbors.

Lois was preceded in death by her brothers, Lyle Young & Richard Young; her daughter-in-law, Theresa Hendee; sister-in-law, Janet Young;

In addition to her husband, Jack, survivors include 4 sons, Sam (Kate) Hendee of Hornell, Dave (Sue) Hendee of Almond, Jack (Linda) Hendee of Hornell and Joe Hendee of Prattsburgh; her sister, Shirley (Don “Red”) Stewart of Dansville; her sister-in-law, Karen Young; 9 grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Jean L. Keenan, 82, of 7 Pine St., Hornell, died early Saturday morning (January 18, 2014) at McAuley Manor, following a long illness.

Born in Rochester, NY on February 27, 1931, she was the daughter of Henry & Florence (VandeVate) Herzog. She resided in Rochester until 1988 and then lived in Florida for 17 years. She has resided in Hornell since June, 2008.

Jean was married on May 4, 1957 to James J. Keenan who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters, Mary Frances (Ronald) Spataro of Rochester, Wendy (Richard) Chappel of Geneseo and Kathleen (David) Hillman of Hornell; 1 son, James J. Keenan of Rochester; 3 sisters, Norma Grolling, Dorothy Salzer & Jane Muratore; several grandchildren, 1great-granddaughter; nieces & nephews.

Mary Ann Nicoloff, formerly of Hornell

Hornell – Mary Ann Nicoloff, 82, of 49440 North Central Ave., New River, AZ, 85027, formerly of Hornell & Wellsville, died Saturday (December 21, 2013) at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, AZ following a long illness.

Born in Hornell on April 14, 1931, she was the daughter of Kenneth & Mary (Piller) Cosgrove.

Mary Ann grew up in Hornell and from 1931 – 1953 and was a proud resident of Hornell’s Old 5th Ward, affectionately known as “The Bloody 5th”. She was a graduate of Hornell High School class of 1949 (“The 49ers”) and later graduated from St. James School of Nursing (class of 1952) where she received her registered nurses license.

She was married in 1953 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Orchard Park, NY to Nicholas A. “Nick” Nicoloff who survives. From 1953 – 1954 they resided in Buffalo where Mary Ann worked as a registered nurse at Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

From 1954 – 1985, Mary Ann & Nick lived in Wellsville where she was employed at Jones Memorial Hospital and also as a Private Duty Nurse. While residing in Wellsville, they owned & operated Nicoloff’s Wines & Spirits and Mary Ann was also a broker and co-owner of Century 21 Southern Hills Realty.

In 1985, they moved to Scottsdale, AZ where they resided until moving to New River, AZ in 1993. For many years, Mary Ann was employed as a registered nurse at John C. Lincoln / Phoenix General Hospital and was a member of Mission of the Good Shepherd Church.

Mary Ann was an overall lover of animals. She owned and operated Hillcroft Kennels in Wellsville, NY where she raised and showed German Shepherds. She raised Nubian goats for milk. She was an avid horseback rider-something she passed on to her daughter and granddaughter (Nicole Trotter). Mary Ann was a charter member of the Canisteo Valley Riding Club. She was a leader for 4-H (teaching Dog Obedience in Wellsville for many years) and the 4 Penny Pony Club.

She was very active in the Kiwanis organization in New River, serving as secretary for a number of years, as well as a leader of the local Key Club and BUGS (Bringing Up Grades) program. She was a charter member and in 2004 helped to start the CERT (Community Emergency of Response Teams) group in New River. She helped to organize and run a wine tasting club in Wellsville (Les Amis du Vin). She was also an avid reader, loved to sew and always enjoyed good conversation.

In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Anne-Marie who died in 1968.

Surviving are her husband, Nicholas A. “Nick” Nicoloff of New River, AZ; her children, Dr. Stephen J (Cindy) Nicoloff of Peoria, AZ, James P. (Michele) Nicoloff of Hornell, Michael J. (Cynthia) Nicoloff of Orlando, FL, Mary Catherine (Dr. Timothy) Trotter of Edmond, OK and John F. (Amy) Nicoloff of Phoenix, AZ; her sister, Margaret C (Nicholas) Changose of Glendale, AZ; as well as 10 grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews.

At Mary Ann’s request there will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass & Graveside Service will be celebrated (later this summer) at a time & date to be announced. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY.

Canisteo – Roger J. Aultman, 62, of 28 Charlie Drive, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday (January 8, 2014) at his home.

Born in Champagne, Illinois, July 5, 1951, the son of Olean and Veronica Pyer Aultman, he had resided in Canisteo all his life. He was a 1969 graduate of Canisteo Central School, and had been employed as a truck driver for the Steuben County Highway Department. Roger was an avid NASCAR Fan, especially enjoying his favorite driver, Bill Elliot. He enjoyed playing pool, horseshoes, euchre, and bowling.

He was predeceased by his parents, one brother, Raymond Aultman and his step-mother, Lucy Totten Aultman.

He is survived by his daughters, Emily (Max Reeves) Aultman of Prattsburg and Amy (Tanya Davis) Aultman of Hammondsport, two sons, Jason (Julie) Aultman of Prattsburg and Gary (Nicole Dawson) Aultman of Amsterdam, his brother, Ronald (Polly Carbone) Aultman of Canisteo, 2 sisters, Rita Kame of Arkport and Roberta Norton of Canisteo, 8 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Edith Mae (Button) Gardiner, 95, Canisteo

Canisteo – Edith M. Gardiner, 95, of 75 Maple St, passed away Friday (January 10, 2014) at her home.

Born in Hornell, November 24, 1918, the daughter of Paul Sherman and Mildred (Martindale) Button, she had resided in Canisteo since the early 1940’s. Edith was a graduate of Hornell High School, Class of 1936. She earned her Registered Nurses degree and was employed at the former Bethesda Community Hospital, did private duty nursing for several years, and had also worked at the former Westinghouse in Bath. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Canisteo and the Stephens Grey Class of the Church, and most recently attended the Canisteo Wesleyan Church. She was also a member and past matron of the former Canisteo Chapter #110, Order of Eastern Star. Edith was a top notch homemaker, known for her devotion to her family, and enjoyed cooking and baking.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Gerald Gardiner in 1969 whom she married on January 1, 1941, as well as her siblings, Ruth Hoagland, Dorothy Daly and Robert Button.

She is survived by 3 sons, Charles Gardiner of Canisteo, Gerald Gardiner of Howard and David (Alice) Gardiner of Canisteo, her sister-in-law, Nora Button of Canisteo, 7 grandchildren Becky (Dan) Todd, Christy (Mike) Parmenter, Emily Smith, Joe Gardiner, Jerry Gardiner, Andrew Gardiner, and Caroline (Ed) Bongio-Gardiner, 5 great grandchildren and nieces & nephews.

AVOCA: Richard A. Lyke, Sr., 74, of Main St. formerly of Howard, passed away Thursday (Jan. 9, 2014) at the bath V.A. following an extended illness.

Richard was born July 30, 1939 in Bath, to Alvaro and Mildred (Wright) Lyke.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1961-68 and was a former milk tester for Steuben County. He was last employed at the Gunlocke Company in Wayland where he retired after 23 years of service.

Richard is survived by four children: Richard A. Lyke, Jr. of Knoxville, TN., Vicki Presler of Wheeler, Kevin (Cathie) Brown of Parlin, N.J. and Brenda Welch of Belmont, his 8 grand children: Felicia, Derek and Emily Brown, Avalon and Steve Lyke, Brittany Davis, Rhett Presler and Betty Jo McCarthy. Richard is also survived by a sister Sondra (Harold) Brown and a brother Gordon (Linda) Lyke all of Howard, and also nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Bonita Lyke.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Wednesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo. Funeral and committal services with military honors will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bath National Cemetery.

Patricia R. Mattie, 85, Hornell

HORNELL-Patricia R. Mattie, 85, passed away Sunday morning (Jan. 12, 2014) at her home on Erie Avenue.

Born in Hornell on March 17, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Ignatius and Mary Venuto Mattie. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her twin brothers, Rev. Richard Mattie and the Rev. David Mattie.

A resident of Hornell for most of her life, Patricia was a graduate of St. Ann’s School, Hornell High School, Class of 1946 and she also attended Syracuse University for several courses.
Before her retirement she was employed for about 38 years as an accountant for the Alliance Mutual Insurance Company in Hornell and later in Albion.

Patricia was a devout member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church where she also was a member of the choir.

Her family includes her two sisters, Mary Louise Mattie of Hornell and Veronica (Guy) Casaceli of Avon; her brother, Ignatius Mattie of Hornell; also her many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. today at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

Lawrence R. Shinebarger, 79, North Hornell

NORTH HORNELL – Lawrence R. Shinebarger, 79, of Cleveland Ave., passed away on Wednesday (January 8, 2014) at Rochester General Hospital after a brief illness. His family was by his side.

Born in Hornell on February 8, 1934, he was the late son of Roland and Alta Mae (Collins) Shinebarger. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his sister, Vera Garrett of Lehighton, PA; his two brothers, Robert Shinebarger and Ronald Shinebarger both of Hornell; and his wife Elizabeth (Kightlinger) Shinebarger.

Larry was a graduate of Hornell High School and married Elizabeth “Betty” Kightlinger on April 16, 1952. Following marriage and prior to attending college he worked at the Hornell Woodworking Company, Elmhurst Dairy, Metropolitan Life Insurance and ACME Supermarket. After attending Alfred State College and then SUNY Geneseo, he earned his master’s degree in English and taught high school at Alfred Almond Central School. He later became an Associate Professor of English and head of the English department at Alfred Agricultural and Technical College until he retired in 1990.

With his love of learning and teaching Larry spent many hours with students, family and friends discussing books, philosophy and politics and was a supporter and frequent visitor of the Hornell Library. Larry and Betty loved the outdoors and spent much of their leisure time planting and tending to flower gardens and bird watching. Their home was always a welcoming place for friends and neighbors to gather. Their special love of animals always included their beloved pet pugs. Larry touched many people throughout his life who will remember him as a special caring person.

His loving family includes his son Douglas (Michelle) Shinebarger of San Diego, CA, his daughter Debra (Gerry) Kusse of Rush, NY, his brother Harry (Donna) Shinebarger of Balston Spa, NY, his four grandchildren Kara (David) Goan and Derek Shinebarger both of San Diego, CA, Clayton Kusse and Katie Kusse both of Rush, NY and two great-grandchildren Faith Goan and Grant Shinebarger both of San Diego and several nephews and nieces.

To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours or services.

CANISTEO/CATATUNK: Clyde B. Quick, 93, went home to be with his Lord Sunday (Dec. 22, 2013) at St. James Mercy Hospital where he was surrounded by the comfort and love of his family.

Clyde was born October 2, 1920 in Hornell to Otis C. and Bessie J. (Gray) Quick. On October 23, 1938 in Dansville, he married the former Georgetta P. “Peg” Stage who predeceased him in June of 2007. He was also predeceased by a son Gerald Quick, an infant daughter Geraldine Quick, daughter Bethel Brown, infant grandson, Robert B. Quick, infant great, grandson, Quinton McCourt and a great granddaughter Amber Quick, also a sister: Anah Burse and a brother Harold Quick.

Clyde was a lifelong resident of the Canisteo Valley. He served our country proudly during WWII in the US Army Third Armored Division from 1944-45 where he attained the rank of Sergeant. He owned and operated Quick’s Auto Service on Second St. in Canisteo from 1953-1960 and in 1959 became mechanic and transportation supervisor for the Canisteo Central School District for 23 years retiring in 1982. He was a former Commander of the Canisteo American Legion for 2 years, and at one time was a Trustee, Deacon and Sunday school teacher at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Adrian. Besides working for the Canisteo School District Clyde enjoyed farming on his Catatunk farm where he raised beef cows, cut lots of firewood and always enjoyed the helping hands of his family and friends. Clyde’s strong Christian devotion and faith will always be a comforting testimonial for his family and friends with the hope and love that will endless be.

Survivors include three sons: Daniel (Judy) Quick of Catatunk, Kenneth (Nancy) Quick of Adrian and Robert “Otis” (Laura) Quick of Catatunk, two daughters: Joyce Sharp of Canisteo and Shirley (William) McCourt of Adrian and a son-in-law Richard Brown of Catatunk. Clyde is also survived by two brothers Eldon Quick of Macedon and Shirley Quick of Hamburg, one sister Audrey (Harold) Dunn of Catatunk, 22 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, 22 great, great grand children and one great, great, great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo. A private family funeral with military honors will take place at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Bennett’s Creek Cemetery in the town of Greenwood.
